Schram Leads State Volleyball To 3-0 Win

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior Kim Schram had 28 kills, tying a single-match school record, while helping to lead Michigan State volleyball to a 3-0 win over Iowa Friday night. Her 28 kills tied the record for number of kills in a three-game match. With the win, the Spartans improve to 11-12 overall and 6-9 in the Big Ten, while Iowa drops to 9-18 overall and 1-14 in league play.
Along with her 28 kills, Schram had 18 digs and two service aces. Freshman Meghan Schoen added 13 kills and three blocks, while fellow freshman, setter Maggie Griffin posted 50 assists and 18 digs. Senior middle Brooke Langston had eight kills with a .500 attack percentage. Libero Marley Bellwood added 15 digs, extending her streak of games with 15 digs or more to six. The Spartans posted an attack percentage of .280 on the night while the Hawkeyes hit .207 in the match.
The Spartans never trailed in game one but had to battle for a close 30-25 win. Schram led the Spartan attack with nine kills and a .438 attack percentage (10K-2E-16TA). Schoen added five kills and freshman Katie Johnson aided the attack with four kills of her own. Griffin had 15 assists and led the team with seven digs. The Spartans had their best offensive attack of the night, hitting .362 in game one.
Game two was a bit of a struggle for the Spartans after losing an early lead to tie the game up at 29-29, but they got back-to-back points to pull out a 31-29 win. State led 5-1 early off four straight service wins. Iowa crept back into the match and the Spartans never lead by more than four points the rest of the way. Langston had four kills with an .800 attack percentage while Schram added seven kills along with six digs. Griffin had 15 assists in game two and added five digs. Johnson had two kills along with three blocks, including one block solo. Michigan State lacked the offense power of game one only hitting. 208, but held Iowa to an .125 attack percentage.
Iowa started off strong in game three, taking a 3-1 lead, but after the Spartans tied the game at 5-5, State never trailed. The Spartans won 30-28 to take game three and the 3-0 victory. Both teams struggled from the service line with five service errors for the Spartans and two for the Hawkeyes. Schram posted a match high 12 kills while adding a team-high eight digs. Johnson and Schoen added five and four kills, respectively. Griffin added 17 assists and six digs. Bellwood posted seven digs.
MSU will host the Minnesota Golden Gophers (23-4, 12-3 Big Ten) Saturday at 8 p.m. The Gophers picked up a 3-2 win at Michigan Friday.
