EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State volleyball players Michelle Kopka and Kim Schram were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV University Division women's volleyball team Friday. A senior, Kopka carries a 3.98 grade-point average as a physics and human biology major. As a member of the all-district team, she is eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Schram, a senior supply chain management major with a 3.58 grade-point average, was named to the district's third team. Both student-athletes are members of MSU's Honors College.
Kopka, a native of Scarbrough, Ontario, was also named to the district first team in 2003. This season, she is hitting .253 and is averaging 2.68 kills per game. Additionally, she has 28 blocks and averages 2.13 digs per game. Kopka hit .333 in back-to-back matches, with 11 kills in each match Oct. 6 and Oct. 9. She was a 2002 and 2003 Academic All-Big Ten honoree, and has been a Dean's List student each semester. She plans to attend medical school after graduation.
Schram leads MSU in kills per game with 4.71 on 367 total kills in the 2004 season. A native of London, Ontario, she is just 16 kills from becoming one of the top three all-time kills leaders at Michigan State. She has posted at least 20 kills in seven of MSU's matches, and recorded at least 15 in 13 matches. Schram was a 2003 AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honoree, as well as a 2003 unanimous All-Big Ten First Team selection. She earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2002 and 2003.
The Academic All-District team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
The Spartans, 10-12 on the season and 5-9 in the Big Ten, host Iowa Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 5 Minnesota Saturday at 8 p.m. A donation of three canned goods per person earns free admission to both matches.
