EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State Director of Athletics Ron Mason has announced that Daune (Koester) Rensing will take over the reigns of the MSU volleyball program on an interim basis after head coach Chuck Erbe announced his retirement effective Dec. 2, 2004.
"I have confidence that Daune Rensing and (assistant coach) Ed Tolentino can work with our student-athletes during this transition period," said Mason. "Our primary goal is to have a timely and thorough search process which will culminate in the hiring of a head coach."
Rensing, who recently completed her fourth season on the Spartan staff in 2004, was the team's top assistant last year. She works with all areas of the team, concentrating on outside hitters, defense and passing. She also serves as the recruiting coordinator and works with the Spartans' annual camps.
Rensing, a Detroit native, came to MSU after two years (1999-2000) as an assistant coach at Georgetown University, where she was responsible for all aspects of recruiting, travel coordination and served as the strength coach. The Hoyas were 43-18 overall during her tenure, and won the 1999 Big East Tournament championship and advanced to the 1999 NCAA Tournament.
Prior to her time at Georgetown, Rensing played professionally in Switzerland and trained in Jesi, Italy. She ran all practices for the Franches-Montagnes Junior Volleyball Program in Switzerland.
Rensing was a standout performer for the University of Maryland volleyball team from 1993-96, twice serving as team captain. Maryland participated in two NCAA Tournaments (1995, 1996) during her playing career, completed an undefeated Atlantic Coast Conference season in 1996 and won the 1996 ACC Tournament title. The 1996 ACC Player of the Year, she was named to the ACC's 50th Anniversary Volleyball Team.
Rensing worked as a student assistant coach for Maryland in 1997, as the squad became the 10th team in NCAA history to have an undefeated regular season (25-0).
Rensing, who graduated from Maryland in 1998 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, has helped organize and coach summer camps at numerous universities.
She married MSU assistant men's soccer coach Damon Rensing on May 29, 2004.
