EAST LANSING, Mich. - Six Spartans, including three seniors, were honored by their teammates at the 2004 Michigan State volleyball banquet on Nov. 28 at Hawk Hollow Country Club.
Kim Schram was voted the team's Most Valuable Player by her teammates. A senior from London, Ontario, Schram was among Big Ten leaders throughout the 2004 season. She also was voted a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection in a vote of the league's coaches.
Diana Steplyk, a senior from Libertyville, Ill., was selected as the Andrea DeLuca Spirit Award. The award is given to the member of the squad who puts the team before personal gain. Given since 1979, the award has had 23 different recipients.
Freshman Meghan Schoen of Aurora, Colo., was awarded the Hitting Efficiency Award, as she led the team with a .285 hitting average on the season. An award given since 1993, Val Sterk is the only other Spartan to earn the award in her freshman season, as she hit .284 in 1993.
Juniors Megan Wallin (Sarasota, Fla.) and Brooke Langston (Germantown, Tenn.) received the Captains' Award as they served as the team's captain in the 2004 season. They are just the third co-captain team to be recognized since the award was created in 1993.
Michelle Kopka, a senior from Scarbrough, Ontario, was given the Top Grade-Point Average Award, and became just the second Spartan all-time to earn the honor three years in a row. Sarah Gustin (1998-2000) is the only other MSU volleyball player to lead her team's academic efforts in three consecutive seasons.
Michigan State ended its season with a 12-16 overall record and finished eighth in the Big Ten with a 7-13 mark.
