EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State volleyball opened its 2004 season with the Green & White intrasquad scrimmage Saturday in Jenison Field House, with the Green team winning, 2-1. The Green team took the first and second games, 30-24, 32-30, with the White squad picking up the third game, 30-26. "I have a lot of ideas about what we need to work on," said head coach Chuck Erbe. "Another strong week of practice will help tremendously. We still have competition for every spot on the floor, and I think that is healthy. We can't let the intensity slip once we feel we have our starters determined. For us to remain strong all season, I believe we need to maintain that competition for starting spots. I believe keeping more players in the mix this year will force competitive practices all season, which can only help us." In the three games, junior co-captain Brooke Langston had a match-high 14 kills to go along with six digs, a service ace, one block solo and a block assist. Freshman and Green teammate Katie Johnson added 13 kills, as the two combined for 27 of the Green team's 45 kills on the night. Redshirt freshmen Miken Trogdon and Tracy Bellwood split the libero duties for the Green team, and combined for 17 digs, two aces and two assists. Andrea Hansen posted five kills (5K-1E-8TA) and hit .500 on the night. For the White team, Kim Schram led with 10 kills, and though she hit just .182 on the night, contributed 10 digs, a block solo and a service ace. Michelle Kopka had seven kills, while Megan Wallin and Maggie Griffin each added five kills. Jessica Hohl had eight digs and a service ace to go along with two block assists. Wallin posted a total of five blocks, a match-best, with one solo and four assisted. The competition for the starting setter spot continues for the Spartans, as junior Mickey Davis had 31 assists, five digs and a block assist on the night. Griffin, a freshman, had 29 assists for the White team, and added seven digs and a block assist of her own. Combined, State struggled at the service line, with a total of 29 service errors between the two teams. Additionally, they posted 15.0 total team blocks, with nine block solos on the night, and hit just .129 combined on the night (77K-48E-243TA). Michigan State opens the regular season with the 2004 Coca-Cola/MSU Volleyball Classic, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 3-4. State hosts Florida A&M, Ohio and St. John's in the six-match, round-robin tournament. The Spartans open against Ohio on Friday at 7 p.m. in Jenison Field House.
