MSU Volleyball Falls To No. 6 Washington, 3-0

WICHITA, Kan. - Michigan State volleyball (5-0, 0-0 Big Ten) fell to No. 6 Washington (5-0, 0-0 Pac-10) in the final game of the Green Mill Restaurant Classic at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kan., Saturday. Game scores in the match were 30-14, 30-17, 30-27.
Megan Wallin had a team-best eight kills on 19 attacks, while Brooke Langston had six kills to go along with a team-best nine digs. Freshman setter Maggie Griffin posted 24 assists in the three-game match. Freshman Meghan Schoen led MSU's blocking efforts with three block assists. Both teams struggled at the service line, as UW had 15 service errors and MSU had 10.
Washington built an early lead at 11-4 and another at 21-8, and despite closing it to seven, State couldn't overcome the lead, as UW took the game, 30-14. MSU struggled throughout the game, and actually hit -.047 (7K-9E-43TA), compared to Washington's .375 attack percentage. Brooke Langston and Katie Johnson each had two kills in the game, while Maggie Griffin had five assists.
The second game saw Washington's Courtney Thompson reel off a six-point service run to build a 16-7 Husky lead, and UW won the second game of the match, 30-17. Marley Bellwood had a kill, while Johnson posted a service ace in the game. Langston had two kills in the game and Megan Wallin contributed four.
The teams battled in the third game, and State led by two at 14-12, but the Spartans could not stretch that lead any further, and UW eventually won the game and match at 30-27. Kim Schram had four kills in the final game of the match, and the Spartan attack percentage improved drastically, to .322 (13K-3E-31TA).
State's Griffin and Langston earned all-tournament honors, while the Most Valuable Player honors went to the Washington libero Candace Lee.
Michigan State next faces Notre Dame at South Carolina Invitational on Friday, Sept. 17 in a 5 p.m. match.
