PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Michigan State volleyball outside hitter Ashley Schatzle has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday. The honor is the first such of her career, and marks the first Spartan player of the week honoree since the 2003 campaign.
"This award is very well deserved," Spartan head coach Cathy George said. "I think Ashley had a phenomenal week and has consistently improved her play throughout the season."
Schatzle averaged 6.5 kills per game and hit .423 last week to help lead the Spartans to a pair of wins over Michigan and Iowa. The MSU junior helped the Green and White to its first win against U-M since the 2004 campaign, and first sweep over the Wolverines since the 1999 season. Schazle served eight-straight points in the third game versus Michigan to spark a Spartan comeback, and matched a career high with 24 kills in the victory. Schatzle, along with teammate Katie Johnson, led MSU with 15 kills on 29 attempts (.345) in Saturday's contest against Iowa that gave Michigan State its 13th win of the season. The victory already boosted MSU one win past its total from last year, while evening its 2006 conference record to 4-4.
Michigan State begins a stretch of four conference road matches, traveling to No. 16 Ohio State (Oct. 20) and No. 2 Penn State (Oct. 21) next weekend. Both contests are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. ET.
