EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State juniors Ashley Schatzle and Miken Trogdon have been named to the Third-Team 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Volleyball District IV Team, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for the prestigious award, a player must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 in the classroom, be a starter or key reserve on the volleyball court, and be in sophomore athletic and academic standing. The awards mark the first Spartan selection since Michelle Kopka garnered first-team honors during the 2003 campaign.
"This is a great honor for Ashley (Schatzle) and Miken (Trogdon)," Spartan head coach Cathy George said. "This award is credit to their hard work both on the court and in the classroom."
Schatzle, an outside hitter for the Green and White, is a nursing major and maintains a 3.56 grade-point average. She currently ranks second on the team and sixth in the league with 4.43 kills per game. Schatzle was honored with her first career Big Ten Player of the Week award on Oct. 16 after contributing 6.5 kills per game to help lead the Spartans to a pair of wins over Michigan and Iowa. The Monroe, Mich., native has tallied double-digit kill totals in 22 contests this season, including matching her career high with 24 versus Michigan.
