EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 2008 Michigan State volleyball team (11-6, 3-3) fell to No. 21 Wisconsin 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-21) Saturday night at Jenison Field House. Freshman Becca Zlabis (Wheaton, Ill.) paced the Spartans, registering 12 kills while hitting .276. Freshman setter Natalie Emro (Wildwood, Mo.) passed out 35 assists.
The Spartans were able to ride the play of Zlabis in the first set as she led the team with five kills from the left side. Despite her play, the Spartans found themselves down early, 7-6. Wisconsin would dictate play from that point on, although the Spartans dominate play at the net. In the first, MSU posted four team blocks as four players tallied two block assists apiece. Despite their efforts, the Spartans dropped the first set, 25-21, marking just the third time that the Spartans have dropped the first set all season.
Outside hitter Megan Schatzle (Monroe, Mich.) corralled four kills from the right side while hitting .429. Emro handed out 14 of her 35 helpers in the first set.
The second set went back-and-forth as Vanessa King (Spring Lake, Mich.) seemed to take over for the Spartans. King hit .444 with five kills en-route to helping the Spartans hit .303 as a team. The efficient attack helped MSU build a 19-17 lead late in the set. Wisconsin would score nine of the next 14 points to win the set 26-24. Zlabis and Schatzle would both add three kills to their stat sheets while sophomore libero Allyson Karaba (Muskegon, Mich.) posted five of her 12 total digs.
The third set would remain close early, but Wisconsin hit .314 as a team to keep the Spartans at bay, winning the set 25-21. Zlabis added four more kills in the third set, moving her match-total to 12 while King added three more kills to her ledger, giving her 11 in the match. MSU tallied eight blocks in the match.
The Spartans will return to action next weekend for their second Big Ten road trip of the season as they head to Minnesota and Iowa next weekend. Live audio with the voice of the Spartans, John Kreger will be provided at www.msuspartans.com.
