THIS WEEK FOR THE SPARTANS
Michigan State wrestling continued Big Ten action this weekend on the road, taking on Wisconsin and Indiana in respective Friday and Sunday duals. Heading in to the weekend, the Spartans are 3-7-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference.
LAST TIME OUT
Michigan State wrestled opened up Big Ten action Friday night with thrilling matches against the fourth-ranked Minnesota Gophers and the Purdue Boilermakers over the weekend.
Against the Gophers, the Spartans won five of the 10 bouts, but couldn't gain enough ground to recover 12 points lost in Minnesota pins, giving UM the 23-15 victory.
Hosting the Boilermakers on Sunday, MSU lost its second heartbreaker of the weekend, losing 18-16 to Purdue. The Spartans headed into the event's final bout ahead by one point, but suffered a late loss, their second-straight in which the match was decided by the final weight class.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
No. 5 Franklin Gomez defeated his fourth and fifth consecutive opponents against Minnesota and Purdue to remain perfect in dual action, 10-0, and extends his overall mark to 18-1. His victory on Friday night was a grand upset of UM's No. 2 Mack Reiter, as Gomez took him down 7-4.
Against Minnesota, Eddie Skowneski, Nick Palmieri, No. 15 Joe Williams and Alan O'Donnell picked up wins. Against Purdue, John Fulger, Joel Trombly and Williams earned points in the Spartans' persistent effort.
SCOUTING THE BADGERS
The No. 13 Wisconsin wrestling team captured its first Big Ten Conference victory of the season with a 20-15 win over No. 17 Indiana last weekend. The Badgers won five bouts and improve to 10-2-1 overall, 1-1-0 in the Big Ten.
SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS
After winning three straight at the Hoosier Quad tournament, No. 16 Indiana dropped its first two Big Ten duals of the season, falling to Wisconsin, 20-15, and at Penn State 25-9. The Hoosiers are now 11-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference.
UP NEXT
Michigan State wrestling's next home duals are in February when the Spartans welcome Ohio State and Northwestern to Jenison Field House. The Spartans face off against the Buckeyes Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m., and against the Wildcats Sunday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m.
