EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team concluded play and finished 14th at the Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga. The Spartans, ranked No. 15 by Golfweek/Sagarin, ended the three days with a 26-over par 890 (295-296-299), after a 11-over 299 today.
Sophomore Jack Newman led the Spartans this weekend, wrapping up the 36 holes at five-over 221 (72-72-77) for a 40th place tie. Newman fired a five-over 77 today, following back-to-back even-par 72s on Friday and Saturday. For the tournament, Newman had seven birdies and played the par fives at three-under.
Senior Ryan Brehm carded a three-over 75 on Sunday to move into a tie for 56th at eight-over 224 (71-78-75) for the weekend. Brehm had a team-high nine birdies this weekend and also posted the lone eagle for MSU.
Freshman Graham Baillargeon concluded the tournament a stroke behind Brehm at nine-over 225 (76-72-77) to tie for 60th. Baillargeon started on the 10th holes and had a string of four birdies over the final five holes of his day. Over his 36 holes, he had eight birdies.
Junior Steve Cuzzort and freshman Payne Gniewek were among a group tied for 65th at 10-over 226, after rounds of one-over 73 and two-over 74, respectively. Like Baillargeon, Cuzzort posted eight birdies over the three days, while Gniewek had five birdies, including the par-five seventh in each of his three rounds.
No. 1 Alabama pulled away from the field today to win by seven stroke over No. 12 Florida with a tournament total of 15-under par 849 (285-280-284). This weekend's field of 18 schools, includes 12 of the top 50 schools in the country.
With a birdie on the 18th today, South Carolina's George Bryan IV edged No. 1-ranked Michael Thompson of Alabama. Bryan IV ended the weekend at eight-under 208 (73-66-69) for the individual title. The tournament features 15 of the top 50 players in the country, according to Golfweek.
Michigan State returns to competition at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif. on March 26-27.
