Alexis Mathews Named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State volleyball red-shirt freshman Alexis Mathews (Detroit, Mich.) has been named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office today. Mathews earns the award after averaging 1.8 blocks per set for the weekend. The award marks Mathews' first in her career.
Mathews recorded her second double-digit block total this weekend, including 11 in the five-set contest against Purdue. In all, Mathews tallied 16 blocks while also averaging 1.3 kills per set this past weekend.
Mathews increased her blocks per set season total from 1.13 entering the weekend to 1.20 heading into the final week of action.
This is the first weekly Big Ten honor for MSU this season and first since Sept. 21, 2009, when Allyson Karaba was named Defensive Player of the Week.
The Spartans host Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 24 for their final home contest of the 2010 season. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. inside the Breslin Center. MSU will conclude its year two days later when it travels to Northwestern on Friday, Nov. 26.
