Kyndra Abron Named to COBRA Magazine All-Region Team

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State volleyball junior Kyndra Abron (Livonia, Mich.) has been named to the COBRA Magazine Midwest All-Region Team as announced by the magazine today. Joining Abron as an honorable mention selection is red-shirt freshman Alexis Mathews (Detroit, Mich.).
Overall, Abron ends the year ranked fourth on the team in kills (256) and total blocks (76). Within the conference, Abron improved to third on the team in kills (174) and second in blocks (57). Abron becomes just the first in Michigan State history to receive Midwest All-Region honors from COBRA Magazine.
The 2009 AVCA All-America honorable mention saw career bests in several categories this season as a junior. Abron recorded a career-best 22 kills at Indiana on Oct. 23. She also posted career-best digs (five) against Wisconsin on Oct. 9 and total blocks (eight) and block assists (eight) against Illinois on Oct. 8.
Mathews earns her first career post-season honor after finishing the season as the top ranking conference freshman in blocks, and the only underclassman ranked in the top-10 in conference only matches, ranking third overall. Mathews also made an impact on the MSU freshman records as she ranks third in blocks per set (1.27), fourth in both assists blocks (109) and total blocks (127) and sixth in solo blocks (18). Her 1.27 blocks per set is 10th all-time in a single season.
COBRA Magazine's purpose is to celebrate the success of volleyball players of African descent in hopes of encouraging black girls across the country to pursue the sport.
