Schatzle Leads Spartans Past Toledo, 3-0

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State volleyball team (8-3) concluded non-conference action with a 3-0 win over Toledo on Friday, Sept. 17. The Spartans improve to 6-2 all-time against the Rockets with their win. Senior Megan Schatzle (Monroe, Mich.) led MSU in its win with 16 kills with five blocks.
The Spartans fell behind early on in set one, 5-1, before storming back to get out on top, 8-7. After trading service for several points, red-shirt junior Jenilee Rathje (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) and junior Natalie Emro (Wildwood, Mo.) recorded a timely block to push the MSU lead to two, 10-8. MSU got its lead to three after a huge kill from junior Kyndra Abron (Livonia, Mich.), making the score 18-15. Schatzle stood strong at the net with a solo block to get it to 19-15, forcing Toledo into a timeout. The Spartans closed out set one after another tandem block by Emro and Rathje, putting the score at 25-23. Rathje, Schatzle and Abron all posted three kills in the first set.
With the early momentum, the Spartans found themselves tied at three before taking off with three point lead at 7-4 after Rathje tallied another solo block. Schatzle was joined at the net by red-shirt freshman Alexis Mathews (Detroit, Mich.) for a block on the Rocket attack to make it 21-17 as Toledo called a timeout. After three straight UT points, MSU called a timeout to make it 21-20. Following the break, the Spartans posted back-to-back points to once again get Toledo on the ropes at 23-20 as the Rockets called their final timeout of the set. The Green and White surrendered two more points to UT before closing out the set with a kill from Schatzle, making the score 25-22. Schatzle led both teams in kills in set two with eight.
Following the intermission, the Green and White fell behind early on, 3-1. The Spartans responded with three straight points to gain the 4-3 lead, before trading service with the Rockets until it was tied at nine. MSU continued its match momentum as it became 11-9 after a kill from Rathje and Schatzle. The Rockets came back on the offense with a 5-1 run, bringing the score to 14-12 as the Spartans called a timeout. MSU managed to get back within one, 21-20, with a kill from Mathews, causing Toledo into a timeout. The Rockets then went to force its first of four set points at 24-23. With their backs against the wall, the Spartans dug deep to break set point each time as it caused one themselves, 26-25, before finally ending the match at 31-29.
Abron was second on the team in kills with nine. Emro effectively quarterbacked the offense with 34 assists, while red-shirt sophomore Mandi Karaba (Muskegon, Mich.) and Zlabis each had nine digs. Emro and Rathje led the team at the net with six blocks, while Mathews and Schatzle each tallied five.
Michigan State returns to action next weekend (Sept. 24-25) when it opens Big Ten action at home against Minnesota and Iowa. Both matches will be held inside Breslin Center and begin at 7 p.m.
