"I kind of like that," head coach Cathy George said of setting the record for fewest points allowed. "I know in game two we started to let that go and got sloppy, I don't think we played as sharp. But then we brought that back around in game three and once we cleaned up our blocking, it started to get back into order."
Junior Lauren Wicinski opened her Michigan State playing career with a thrilling first set; notching five aces in a 25-10 win for the Spartans. Six players, including Wicinski, scored a kill in the first set and Michigan State had a .727 attack percentage.
"I thought our team played exceptionally well in game one," George said. "I was glad to see the depth in our program and how they were able to play for us."
Michigan State stayed on top and took the second set, 25-17, behind seven kills from Wicinski. Kristen Kelsay added six assists and Kori Moster had three digs and a pair of service aces.
Sophomore Jazmine White notched seven kills in set three and Alexis Mathews chipped in with five, helping the Spartans close out the match with a 25-12 win.
Lauren Wicinski finished with 17 kills on 23 attacks and Alexis Mathews had 10 kills on 14 attacks in the first match of the season. Kori Moster led the way defensively for MSU and had 10 digs in the match, while Kristen Kelsay recorded 33 assists. As a team, Michigan State had a .547 attack percentage on the night.
