Chloe Reinig set a career high in kills for the second straight match, recording 24 on a career-best 55 swings. Taylor Galloway had 61 attempts and had her second-straight double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs, while Allyssah Fitterer had 12 kills and six blocks. Jazmine White tied her career best with eight blocks. Senior Ryian Hubbard had 29 assists and 14 digs in her first start of the season, while freshman Abby Monson had 17 and 14 digs in her first career double-double.
The Spartans entered the Invitational shorthanded - freshman hitter Holly Toliver was missing her third straight match with injury, and both setters - freshman Rachel Minarick and junior Halle Peterson - were also on the bench. MSU compensated for the personnel changes by being unstoppable at the net, recording eight team blocks in the opening set alone. Chloe Reinig had three kills and a pair of blocks - including one solo, in setting the tone, while White had four blocks and three each were recorded by Taylor Galloway and Autumn Christenson.
The visitors took the next two sets to take a 2-1 lead in the match. After eight blocks in the opening set, the Spartans committed four blocking errors and had no blocks, while hitting just .125. Reinig had eight of her 24 kills in the frame. The Blackbirds responded to the first-set loss with 12 kills, two team blocks, and hitting .367, paced by four Foit kills. In the third, LIU-Brooklyn took a 25-20 win, hitting .250 and getting six kills from Tamara Ignjic, along with another five from Foit.
The Spartans battled back for a fourth-set win to send it to a fifth, 26-24. Fitterer had seven kills in the frame, while Hubbard went for 10 assists and six digs; Reinig contributed another six kills and hit. 333. MSU battled back from an early 10-4 deficit to tie it at 11, and then held a lead as many as four points down the stretch. With the score tied at 24, MSU got a kill from Fitterer, followed by a Foit error, to close out the set.
In the fifth set, MSU had an 8-6 lead at the crossover, but the visitors scored five straight points to pull ahead, 11-8. MSU fought back to tie it at 12, but LIU-Brooklyn took three of the next four points to secure the victory, their second over a BCS-conference school this season.
MSU is back in action at 7 p.m. when it takes on Western Kentucky.
