Big Ten Double Dual On Tap for Spartans
3/31/2017 12:00:00 AM | Women's Rowing
East Lansing, Mich. - After moving up to No. 17 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) national poll this week, the Spartans hit the road for a Big Ten Double Dual at Indiana this weekend, taking on the host Hoosiers in addition to Iowa and Kansas.
Both Big Ten crews MSU will face this weekend have also earned spots in the national rankings -- Indiana is No. 16 (just one spot ahead of the Spartans), while Iowa checks in at No. 14. Overall, there are six Big Ten teams in the Top 20, with Ohio State (2), Michigan (3), Wisconsin (12), ahead of the three crews competing in Bloomington this weekend.
The Spartans will face the Hawkeyes in the morning session, and then line up with the Hoosiers and Kansas in the afternoon session that begins at 12:30 pm. Racing begins with the second novices/fourth varsity and will include third varsity/novice eights, three groups of varsity fours, and then the second novice eight and novice eight to wrap up each session. No. 20 Louisville will also be in Bloomington, but will not line up again the Spartans this weekend.
Fans are encouraged to watch the action from Riddle Point Park, which is located at 7599 North Tunnel Rd., Unionville, Indiana 47469. Parking and admission is free. Indiana is also providing an audio feed for the racing on IUHoosiers.com.
The Spartans are coming off a weekend where the squad competed in three different venues -- the NCAA boats (Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Varsity Four) headed east for a B1G dual at Rutgers before taking on a pair of top-10 crews at Princeton with Brown. MSU handled the Scarlet Knights on Friday by commanding margins, and then turned their attention to the stiff competition on Lake Carnegie on Saturday. The Spartan varsity eight was extremely competitive against its Ivy foes, and despite a third-place finish, was just six-tenths of a second behind the No. 5 Bears, and half a length behind winner No. 10 Princeton.
The novice boats also faced off with some Ivies, while taking on Big Ten rivals Ohio State and Michigan down on Belleville Lake. Both had a first and a second-place finish -- the first novice eight downed Michigan and Radcliffe in the morning by open water and finished only second to Yale in the afternoon, while the second eight was sixth-tenths of a second behind Ohio State in the morning before turning the tables in the afternoon and defeating both OSU and the Wolverines by open-water margins.
