 GAME REPLAY
Â
•  SET ONE: MSU raced out to a 6-3 lead, but Nia Robinson brought her team within a point with three straight terminations before MSU committed a hitting error to tie it 9-9. NU extended its run to 6-1, pulling ahead 11-9 and forcing the Spartans to call their first time out. Leading 14-11, the Wildcats had 10 kills and were hitting .300, while MSU was struggling at .136. MSU countered with a 4-0 run – which included a kill and a block from Chronowski – to take a 15-14 lead. The teams kept trading mini-runs, which allowed the home team to pull ahead 20-17 before a Haggerty kill and a Gros ace trimmed it back down to one before NU countered to go back up by three with am MSU error and a block by Ella Grbac. Another stuff by the Wildcats – their fifth of the night – got the home team to set point, and Ella Grbac finished it off with a sharp-angle shot. Grbac, Abryanna Cannon, and Nia Robinson all had four kills for the Wildcats, while Haggerty, Chronowski, and Poljan all had three for MSU. The Spartans hit just .139 in the frame (12-7-36), with five of those errors coming from the five team blocks by NU,
Â
•  SET TWO:  The teams were engaged in a tight set early, tied at 8-8, and 10-10 before Northwestern used a 4-0 run to pull ahead 14-10, and then got back-to-back aces to take its largest lead at 18-13, which MSU stopped with a Chronowski kill. MSU had seven errors to six kills at that point, but got slightly back on track with a big kill from Meredith Norris that trimmed the lead down to 19-16.  The Spartans tried to pull closer, but heads-up plays by the home team allowed them to chip away and get to set point at 24-19, and an error by MSU ended it to allow the home team a 2-0 match lead. The Spartans hit just .077 in the second set (10-8-26), which included tthree each kills from Haggerty and Chronowski; Robinson had four along with a block for NU, and Grbac also had three kills and a solo stuff. NU hit just .167, but added three blocks – all solo – to help its cause in taking a 2-0 lead.Â
Â
Â
•  SET THREE:    The Spartans were assertive in the third set, taking a 5-2 lead with a pair of early blocks, but the home team evened things up at 5-5. The teams traded errors to get to 7-7, then traded blocks to get to 9-9. MSU used a 5-2 run to pull ahead 14-12, and the Wildcats called a time out. NU went on a 4-0 run out of the time out to pull ahead 16-14, forcing the Spartans to call a time out to try to regroup. NU's run continued to six straight before a Chronowski solo block – her fourth – made it 18-15. Back-to-back Grbac errors trimmed the MSU deficit down to one, 18-17, and Northwestern called its second time out.  The home team closed out the set on a 7-3 run to seal the three-set victory, NU's first in Big Ten play this season.Â
