Johnson, Chronowski share kill lead
SPARTAN SYNOPSISÂ Â Â
Â
Michigan State fell to No. 7 Wisconsin at Jenison Field House on Saturday evening, dropping their only match against the Badgers this season (14-25, 20-25, 23-25). The loss snapped a two-game winning streak against Wisconsin, which MSU defeated twice last season.Â
Â
The Spartans (15-10, 3-9 Big Ten) continue to improve, but fall just short in their matches against ranked opponents. MSU has played three teams in a row which are ranked in the top seven nationally.Â
Â
The Spartans held leads in all three sets, with 19 tie scores and eight lead changes in the match. Molly Johnson and Alyssa Chronowski each had eight kills to lead the MSU effort, while Maddie Haggerty had seven kills and seven digs.  Rebecka Poljan had a team-best three blocks (one solo) and had five kills, hitting a team-best .286.Â
Â
The Badgers were led by Dana Rettke and Grace Loberg, each checking in with 11 kills. Rettke held the match lead with four blocks.Â
Â
 QUOTABLEÂ
"It's tough with this type of schedule – you see the scoreboard, but there's lots of other measurables in which we are consistently improving. That's what you get with a young team. We feel like we're on the cusp of breaking through. The schedule, however, does no one in the Big Ten any favors – there's a battle night-in and night-out. No nights off, and no 'easy games'. We knew that this young team would be tested and beaten up, but we're getting better every match. We need to keep our heads in the process and keep improving." Â
 TOP PERFORMERSÂ

•  MSU has now dropped five straight matches, its longest streak of the season. In those 15 lost sets, MSU has been within five points 10 times, and within three points on five occasions.Â
Â
Â
 GAME REPLAYÂ
Â
•   SET ONE: Michigan State ran out to a 4-0 lead, but the teams quickly settled in and the teams found themselves tied at 9-9. The Badgers used an 7-2 run to take a 17-11 lead, at which point the Spartans called a time out. The Badgers kept their foot on the gas to open up their lead to 22-14, but Wisconsin closed it out on a 4-0 run to seal it, 25-14. Maddie Haggerty had three kills and four digs, and Molly Johnson also had three kills. Both Grace Loberg and Tionna Williams had three kills for the visitors, who hit .346 (11-2-26).
Â
•   SET TWO:  The teams were tied at 3-3 after a Chronowski solo stuff, but a service error on each side and a kill by Rettke gave the Badgers a 5-4 edge. Trailing 9-6, MSU got a pair of kills from Maddie Haggerty and two aces from Shklyar to pull ahead 10-9. MSU was able to take a 14-11 lead, primarily on a Maddie Haggerty service run, but the Badgers fought back to tie it at 15-15 on a kill by Loberg. From there, Wisconsin closed it out on a 10-5 run, taking the set by a 25-20 margin. Wisconsin continued its hot hitting with a 13-2-26 mark (.423) in the frame, led by Rettke's four kills. Maddie Haggerty and Chronowski each had three in the Spartan effort (11-5-26, .231)
Â
•   SET THREE:    The teams were within two points through most of the set, with the intensity ratcheted up on both sides of the net. Wisconsin pulled ahead 18-15, but the Spartans countered with a 3-0 run on a block by Gros and Swartz and a Chronowski termination to tie things back up at 18-18. An MSU error and Madison Duello kill allowed the Badgers to retake the lead. Trailing 22-19, the Spartans got a big kill by Gros and a Badger error to pull back within one, but a service error gave the visitors the sideout. Poljan rolled one off the tape to bring MSU within one at 23-22, but Wisconsin went to Rettke for their final two kills around a Johnson termination to win the set, 25-23. Chronowski had four kills in the frame to pace the Spartans, while both Rettke and Loberg had five for the Badgers, who hit .231.Â
