Shklyar delivers 31-assist, five-ace performance
SPARTAN SYNOPSIS
Michigan State came up against a feisty, scrappy Northeastern squad in the opening game of the Fairfield Invitational, but managed to pull away with a 3-0 victory (25-17, 26-24, 25-20). MSU is now 6-1 on the season and has won six matches in a row since an opening-night setback to Tennessee.
Both Maddie Haggerty and Naya Gros had 13 kills to pace the Spartan effort. Haggerty hit .462 and added five digs, while Gros hit a match-high .579 and added four blocks to share the team lead.
For Northeastern, Athena Ardila had nine kills, while Hannah Boyd had eight to go with three digs.
Gros shared the blocking lead in the match with sophomore Julia Hatcher (two kills) and classmate Molly Johnson, who added five terminations. Freshman setter Elena Shklyar had 31 assists, six digs, five aces, and two blocks. The five aces matches the season-best five put up by fellow setter Maggie Midgette earlier this season vs. Chattanooga.
Michigan State completes day one of the Fairfield Invitational later tonight when it plays host Fairfield at 7 pm.

GAME REPLAY
• SET ONE: Northeastern stayed within three points as MSU built a 10-7 lead, then the Huskies tied the game up at 12-12 with sharp hitting, starting off with a 9-0-15 performance. MSU was hitting .400, with a pair of blocks by Natalie Sholin the only two of MSU's three hitting errors. With the teams tied at 14-14, MSU rallied back for a 6-1 run to win the race to 20, asserting themselves at the net and made things very difficult for the Northeastern hitters. The Green & White closed out the set on an 11-2 run to capture the opening frame by a 25-16 margin; Gros had five kills on eight swings, (.833), and Haggerty added three kills as MSU hit .333 as a team.
• SET TWO: MSU took early three-point leads again at 7-4 and 10-7, and pushed it to 12-8 before the Huskies called a time out. Gros was still cruising without an error with seven kills on nine swings through that point of the match, and Haggerty was doing her damage with six kills of her own. As they did in the opening set, the scrappy Huskies side tied it up at 14-14, and the Spartans once again began to pull ahead, making it another four-point edge at 18-14. Northeastern learned from its first-set struggle and kept its foot on the gas to tie the frame at 21-21 with a 3-0 run that included back-to-back kills from Athena Ardelia, then took the lead on a service ace from Samantha Shupe. MSU got the next two points on NU errors, regaining the lead at 23-22; a tip by Ardelia re-tied the score. With the frame tied at 24-24, Gros put away her ninth kill of the match to gain the advantage, and a block by Gros and Shklyar closed it out, 26-24.
• SET THREE: The Spartans opened the third set with back-to-back blocks, and the teams were tied at 4-4 early. It stayed tight as MSU could only build a two-point edge, and the teams were tied 14-14 before NU scored four straight points out of a time out, on three kills and an ace. The run was 7-1 for the Huskies overall, and Haggerty halted the 4-0 run for NU with a sharp shot down the line. MSU countered with a run of its own, getting two blocks and a kill from Haggerty and a pair of kills from Chronowski to cap a 7-1 run that allowed the Spartans to regain the lead at 21-20. A pair of Ardelia errors and a closing block by Chronowski and Gros helped the Spartans to take the set and a 3-0 victory. Both Gros and Haggerty had four kills in the final frame.
