Men's Tennis Wraps up Play at Bayliss, Farnsworth-Ivy Plus Invites

SOUTH BEND/PRINCETON - The Michigan State men's tennis team wrapped up play Sunday at the Bayliss/Farnsworth Ivy-Plus Invites.
"Great start to the season. We were challenged, we were pushed and we got better. Anthony Pero and Kazuki Matsuno stood out going 3-1 in singles play. We still have ways to go and we are excited that we have three more events to play this fall to build up our match count and take our games to the next level!," said head coach Gene Orlando.
Freshman Kazuki Matsuno grabbed a singles win at the Bayliss Invite, knocking off Julian Robinson of Marquette in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Jarreau Campbell, a freshman from Rolling Hills, Mich., fell to Shunya Maruyama, 6-3, 6-3, and the freshman duo dropped a close decision to Chester Wickwire and Bradley Mittleman of Nebraska, 7-5.
Sophomore Anthony Pero competed in the finals of his side of the bracket, falling to Ethan Leon of SMU, 6-1, 6-0. Pero went 3-1 in singles action on the weekend. Elsewhere, John Carlin fell in the final of his bracket to Nevin Arimilli of Texas, 6-4, 6-4. Gates and Pero fell in doubles action to Karl Poling and Wil Peters of Princeton (8-3) along with Carlin and Keene to Robby Shmansky and Ryan Cheng of Yale.
MSU is next in action on Oct. 11-13 when they play host to the MSU Open on the campus of Michigan State.
