Spartans Split a Pair of Matches on Day One of B1G Match Play

PALM COAST, Florida – The Michigan State men's golf team began its spring schedule on Friday with the Big Ten Match Play Championship at the Hammock Beach Resort Ocean Course in Palm Coast, Florida. The Spartans tied Wisconsin, 3-3, in their opening round match at the par-72, 6,981-yard course, but advanced to the quarterfinals on the tiebreaker of total holes won. In the quarterfinals, which were shortened to 14 holes due to darkness, MSU fell to Nebraska, 3.5-2.5.

In the opening round against the Badgers, Bradley Smithson edged Nick Robinson in a back-and-forth match, 2 &1; Landon Ernst never trailed after nine holes and topped Coalter Smith, 5 & 3; and Andrew Walker trailed just once in his 2 & 1 win over Pete Kuhl.

In the afternoon quarterfinals, Ernst was again victorious, 4 & 2 over Mark Foelbaek. James Piot never lost a hole after the first four and defeated Tanner Owen 5 & 3. Smithson halved his match with Tom Westenberger.

The Spartans will meet Iowa in the first matches of the day on Saturday, beginning at 7:40 a.m.
