EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State's Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) has announced the athletic department's highest academic and community service awards for the 2019-20 academic year.
The awards have been unveiled annually in April for the past 22 years at the Academic Excellence Award Gala, but unfortunately due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the gala was canceled this year and the 23rd annual awards were announced online.
To qualify for the academic gala, student-athletes must be in at least their third semester at MSU and have obtained a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or have earned a 3.00 or higher GPA during the 2019 calendar year. In addition, graduates are recognized as well. In all, 359 student-athletes would have qualified for this year's gala in the Breslin Center.
The major award winners are listed below, followed by the Scholar-Athlete Award winners for each sport and the entire Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Honor Roll.

PRESIDENT'S AWARD
The most prestigious individual academic honor, the President's Award, is given to the male and female graduating senior with the highest cumulative grade point average and who has exhausted their eligibility and completed their degree in the 2019-20 school year. This year, four student-athletes earned the President's Award with perfect 4.0 GPAs: Julia Crowe (women's soccer), Samantha McLean (volleyball), Nehemiah Mork (men's swimming and diving) and Scott Piper (men's swimming and diving).
Crowe exemplifies what it means to be a successful student-athlete at Michigan State University. The three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten recipient carries a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA while majoring in animal science with a concentration in animal biology and pre-veterinary medicine. The Honors College member is a three-time varsity letterwinner for the Spartans on the soccer field.
Crowe has also dedicated time giving back to the community, including volunteering at the Humane Society and MSU Food Bank and Pediatric Ward Volunteer at Sparrow Hospital. Also, Crowe has taken leadership roles in campus organizations, including as the treasurer of the Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society, the Pre-Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) and as an undergraduate research assistant. Through her leadership role with the PVMA, she has been involved with the Food Drive and Free Dog Wash Outreach initiative. Crowe will graduate in May and will attend the College of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University in the fall.
McLean has been a standout both on the floor and in the classroom throughout her time in East Lansing. The Grand Rapids native is just the second two-time Academic All-America pick in program history, joining All-American Dana Cooke, who was a third-team pick in 1995 and earned a spot on the first team in 1996. McLean was a third-team selection as a junior in 2018 before earning a spot on the first team this year.
McLean is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and will earn her third consecutive Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honor this spring as a kinesiology/pre-med major with a minor in health promotion. In addition to maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA, she served as the Spartan team captain and was MSU's honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. She served as MSU's primary DS, and averaged 1.62 digs per set while adding 20 service aces, good for second on the team and one of six players with double-digit aces. McLean helped the Spartans maintain a .183 opponent hitting percentage, which was the fourth-lowest in the Big Ten. She plans on working as a medical scribe at Spectrum Health Hospital before beginning medical school in 2021.
"Sam is deserving of every award and recognition she has received throughout her career," said volleyball head coach Cathy George. "She is one of the most self-motivated and driven athletes I have had the privilege to coach, as she brings the same level of focus and determination to the floor for practices and matches as she does academically. Managing a pre-med curriculum while being a student-athlete is impressive enough but Sam did that while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA over her four years. There is no doubt Sam embodies all that we want our student-athletes to be and I'm thrilled that she continues to be recognized for all the work she has put in throughout her career."
Mork has experienced immense success at Michigan State University. The three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar holds a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering and minoring in computer science. He made the Dean's List every semester at MSU and was a two-time winner of the program's scholar-athlete award.
A four-time varsity letterwinner, Mork holds school records in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay. He was named the program's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner and earned Michigan State Student-Athlete of the Month honors in January 2020.
Additionally, Mork has showcased tremendous commitment to the community by participating in several events, including with the Salvation Army Toy Shop, Chuck-A-Puck, All-Children Exercise Simultaneously (ACES) Day, City Rescue Mission, Operation Christmas Child, Athletes in Action, Teams for Toys, Women's Shelter, Youth Haven and the Student-Athlete Food Drive. Mork will be pursuing his PhD in Mechanical Engineering after graduation.
Piper embodies what it means to be an outstanding student-athlete at Michigan State University. The three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and three-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient carries a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA while majoring in biosystem engineering. In the classroom, Piper was the first student-athlete in program and school history to be awarded the Wayne Duke Postgraduate Scholarship from the Big Ten Conference. He was named a CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-American and is also a Scholastic All-American. Piper spent numerous semesters on Dr. Jonathan Hardy's undergraduate research team in the microbiology department at Michigan State and also interned with Orchid Orthopedic Solutions in Holt.
A multi-event swimmer for the Spartans, Piper competed in the individual medley, backstroke, and butterfly events. He holds the varsity records in the 200 butterfly, 1:45.35, and the 200 IM, 1:46.42, both of which he set in 2019. Piper also qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials at the 2018 USA Winter Nationals in 200 IM.
A leader on campus, Piper is the Vice President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and serves as the SAAC representative on the Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU) board. He is also an Honors College Dean's Ambassador. In addition, he was heavily involved with a variety of community outreach events, including Salvation Army, the Student-Athlete Food Drive, and shaving his head to raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation alongside other student-athletes. Piper will graduate in May and is currently deciding between multiple Master of Science (MS) or Master of Engineering (MEng) programs for biomedical engineering.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR'S AWARD
The women's swimming and diving team and the men's tennis program were honored with the Athletic Director's Awards for achieving the highest team cumulative GPA after the fall 2019 semester.
Winners of the Athletic Director's Award for the second year in a row, the women's swimming and diving team's commitment to the classroom has paid off. Under head coach Matt Gianiodis, the team boasted a program-record 3.695 cumulative GPA average, with 12 student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0 GPA for the fall 2019 semester.
"I'm really appreciative of the work SASS continues doing to give these kids their due," said Gianiodis. "We have an incredible team and they excel in so many areas. We have been looking forward to Scott Piper and Nehemiah Mork giving their talk for a long time (for winning the President's Award) and seeing our women's team take the stage again (for winning the Athletic Director's Award). It is tough not having the gala, but it's a good way to still to honor our team members."
The men's tennis team continues its rich history of academic excellence. Achieving a department high 3.812 cumulative GPA, the program set a new record by becoming the team (male or female) with the highest cumulative GPA since the inception of the Athletic Director's Award in 2001. The team claims the Athletic Director's Award for a record-setting 14th time under head coach Gene Orlando.
"This is a phenomenal accomplishment for our 2019-20 squad," said Orlando. "Our goal each and every year is to be the best we can be in the classroom and on the court. This team made the commitment to each other and made personal sacrifices to accomplish and earn this prestigious honor. We strongly believe success in the classroom leads to success on the court and a brighter future."

GWENDOLYN NORRELL COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP AWARD
Gabriella Douglas of the gymnastics team was named the winner of the Gwendolyn Norrell Community Service and Leadership Award. The award is presented to the student-athlete who has demonstrated the highest level of commitment to impacting the areas of leadership and community service.
Over the course of her career, Douglas has been a true humanitarian and leader in the East Lansing community and beyond. Through her positions as the gymnastics team captain, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President, MSU Athletic Council Member, Diversity and Leadership Committee Member, MSU Athletics Alcohol and Other Drugs Committee, Big Ten SAAC Representative and Athletic Director's Leadership Group Member, Douglas has been a voice for student-athletes at every level. Her passion to serve others is evident through her active involvement and leadership in the community. Douglas serves as the Green Bandana Project Coordinator, while also participating in outreach activities including Special Olympics, Pediatric Ward Volunteer at Sparrow Hospital, Making Strides of Lansing Breast Cancer Walk, March is Reading Month, Random Acts of Kindness Week, Student-Athlete Food Drive and the Teams for Toys initiative.
In competition, Douglas served as the gymnastics team captain for two seasons and was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team and Big Ten All-Championship Team last season. The two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honoree will graduate in May with a degree in kinesiology and minor in health promotion.
"Not only do Ella's athletic accolades during her career here at Michigan State stand alone, Ella's recent AAI Honda award nomination added to the list of accolades she has achieved for her participation in either leading or participating on numerous committees in the academic arena," said gymnastics head coach Mike Rowe. "With the demands of being a student-athlete and her vigilance in being successful in the classroom, Ella has also been a major leader and influence on the importance and significance of giving back, whether it be to the community or her own special interests.
"I have always commended Ella for her strong commitment and compassion for making community outreach a priority, even with everything she manages to balance on her plate and there is no doubt that she is the consummate candidate for this award. We are so proud of Ella and all of her accomplishments throughout her career as a Spartan."

DIVERSITY AND LEADERSHIP AWARD
Women's track and field junior Kayli Johnson is the recipient of the Diversity and Leadership Award. Johnson has shown a commitment to the delivery of diversity and leadership programming within the Department of Athletics and campus community.
Through her involvement with the Athletic Department's Diversity and Leadership Committee (DLC), Johnson has taken on various roles to engage student-athletes as the host/facilitator at the DLC Open House and the Athletics Freshman Kickoff. Johnson has used her platform as a student-athlete to participate in the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Week as MSU's Social Media Campaign Coordinator and has taken part in Black History Month Social Media Engagement to raise awareness and engage the campus community.
Johnson has not only made a significant impact on the campus community, but also in the Detroit and surrounding Michigan communities. Her involvement as a Student-Athlete panelist for Detroit Public School students, field event coordinator at the MHSAA Regional Track Meet and participation at Wayne State University Make-A-Difference Day has helped encourage participation and engagement in youth in surrounding communities. Johnson was selected by her coaches and teammates as the 2020 team captain for the women's track and field team.
"We've been fortunate enough to win this award a number of times and I think it speaks volumes to the leadership that we have consistently on our team," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Walt Drenth. "Kayli is a great example of that leadership. The team voted her captain; she's a good student, she works really hard, she's a model citizen for us. I think that shows in the community, the university community and the people around her. It speaks a lot about how she was raised and how she looks at the world and how she continues to mature and move forward."

HAROLD & RAYNOR SHNIDER OFFICE OF THE PROVOST AWARDS
Madeline Reilly (women's swimming and diving, kinesiology major) and Adam Goodsir (hockey, kinesiology) are this year's winners of the Harold & Raynor Shnider Office of the Provost Awards. The honor is given to a sophomore student-athlete who embodies the characteristics promoted by Student-Athlete Support Services, with emphasis on academic performance, community involvement and leadership ability.
Reilly illustrates what it means to be a student-athlete at Michigan State University. A two-time varsity letterwinner and Dean's List recipient, the Academic All-Big Ten honoree carries a 3.67 cumulative GPA in kinesiology with a minor in health promotion. She spent the 2019-20 academic year as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
In her time at Michigan State, Reilly has made a significant impact in the community through numerous events including Spartan Buddies, the Green Banana Project, Teams for Toys, Salvation Army Toy Shop, Student-Athlete Food Drive, Chuck-A-Puck and many opportunities helping in local hospitals with Sparrow Hospital Holiday Caroling and the MSU Pediatric Cancer Holiday Party. Reilly is currently working at Prisma Health in South Carolina and as an anesthesia technician.
In just two years as a student-athlete at MSU, Goodsir's impact on the community in which he has grown up has been impressive. The Okemos native's dedication to the classroom is evident through his 3.627 GPA. The kinesiology major was named to the Dean's List in the fall of 2019 and will earn Academic All-Big Ten honors this season.
Goodsir was a part of MSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2019-20 and participated in several community service initiatives, including Accessible Trick or Treating, the Green Bandana Project for mental health awareness, sled hockey and the student-athlete food drive. On the ice, Goodsir appeared in every game for the Spartans to earn his second varsity letter.
"Adam has been an outstanding role model of what a student-athlete should be at MSU," said hockey head coach Danton Cole. "His leadership spreads from the classroom to on ice and into the community. He is a great example of what it means to be a Spartan and is well deserving of the Provost Award."
