EAST LANSING – Drew DeRidder made 28 saves while seniors Brody Stevens and Tommy Apap both had a goal and assist as Michigan State blanked Ohio State, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Munn Ice Arena.
Apap gave MSU a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, while Stevens added the insurance marker with 11:22 to play in the third.
"it was obviously a lot better feeling tonight," MSU head coach Danton Cole said. "In terms of having battle, skating, moving, making plays – it was a completely different team. The challenge now – again we keep proving this to ourselves – let's not be a team that is driven by adversity; let's be a team that can build on some success.
"Everything we didn't do last night, we did tonight."
Apap and Stevens teamed up with fellow senior Gianluca Esteves to make it 1-0 at the 10:01 mark of the opening period.
Stevens carried the puck all the way up ice before dishing it to Esteves on the right side at the OSU blue line. From just inside the blue line on the right side, Esteves spotted a streaking Apap through the slot and fed him a perfect pass. Apap took his time and snapped the puck into the top left corner of the net for his third goal of the season.
Both teams went 0-for-2 on the man-advantage in a scoreless second period.
In a back-and-forth third period, it was a loose puck in front that Stevens was able to put back to make it 2-0 with 11:22 to go.
Off a pass from Apap, freshman defenseman Aiden Gallacher sent the puck from the right point toward the net where it bounced off an OSU player and then over the Stevens, who was off the left of the crease and sent the puck past goaltender Tommy Nappier.
Just a minute prior to the Spartans getting their second goal, DeRidder turned away OSU's Matt Cassidy and Austin Pooley's attempts on a near 2-on-0 break.
"Drew was outstanding right from the get-go," Cole said. "I like to say he was ahead of the puck all night. On seem passes, he was moving before the pass. He was square, he was locked in and confidence-wise for the guys, that's a big thing. He makes a couple of big saves and the guys relax a bit."
With over three minutes to play, OSU pulled Nappier for the extra attacker. A Spartan penalty with 1:02 to go gave the Buckeyes a 6-on-4 advantage, but DeRidder and the Spartans denied every attempt to come away with their second shutout win of the year.
MSU finished the game with a 35-28 edge in shots on goal. Both teams went 0-for-5 on the power play.
Michigan State will close out January next weekend on the road at Wisconsin on Friday (8 p.m. ET/FS Detroit) and Saturday (4 p.m. ET/FS Detroit +).
