EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Three Michigan State track & field athletes will be competing in the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Thursday-Saturday, March 11-13, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.Â
Juniors Rebecca Mammel (weight throw) and Jenna Magness (5000m) will represent the women's team, while senior Morgan Beadlescomb (5000m) will compete on the men's side. Senior Lynsie Gram also qualified for the 5000m, but will focus on the cross country championship on Monday, March 15.
The championships are hosted by the University of Arkansas at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. This is a closed event and fans will not be allowed in attendance.
"It's an exciting time to have back to back NCAA Championship meets," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said about next week's cross country championships. "I am thrilled for Becca, Jenna, and Morgan as well as our cross country squads. Jenna and Morgan in particular have an adventure ahead of them racing the 5k Friday in Fayetteville and 6k and 10k in Monday in Stillwater. Competing and training, as well as the perspective gained, while managing all aspect of COVDI-19 has prepared us well."
The first Spartan to compete with be Mammel in the women's weight throw on Thursday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. ET. Mammel has had a standout season, finishing second in the weight throw at the Big Ten Championships with a throw of 21.07m. She set a personal-best 22.19m at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational to open the season.
"Rebecca has grown both has a person and a student-athlete," Breznau said. "She is a leader and is always supporting her teammates. She is critical part of our team moving forward with a culture of ownership. I know our team will support her on Thursday from afar. We cannot wait to celebrate with Becca upon her return."
On Friday, March 12, Magness will run the 5000m at 9:05 p.m. ET. She shattered the Michigan State record in the women's 5000m, finishing first with a time of 15:42.73 at the SPIRE B1G Invitational on Feb. 12. The previous record was held by Emily MacLeod in 2011 with a time of 15:48.20. Magness' time is still the third-fastest in the NCAA this season. She went on to earn her first Big Ten Indoor title last week, winning the 5000m.
"Jenna has become a fearless competitor because she understand the importance of being process driven and helping her team succeed. Along with (former Director of Cross Country and Track & Field) Coach Drenth, we could see it coming last year with her placing second at Indoor Big Ten's. She stayed consistent after shut down last March, and now she is seeing the reward," Breznau said.
Beadlescomb will also be in action on Friday in the men's 5000m which is 4:05 p.m. ET. After returning from illness, the senior helped the men's DMR finish fifth at the Big Ten Championships. After winning the title last season, he finished second in a thrilling 5,000m race this season.Â
"Morgan's transition back to competing has been astounding. He is clearly talented, but what he's been able to do has more to do with his determination, will and trust in our process. To anchor our DMR at Big Ten's to fifth and then place second in the 5k is a testament to his progress and also to the work of Coach (Aaron) Simoneau. We are looking forward to Friday and Monday for Morgan," Breznau added.
Live championship coverage will be streamed on ESPN3. Additional details on times of the live ESPN3 coverage will be forthcoming. A re-air of the championship will take place starting at 9 p.m. Eastern time Sunday, March 14 on ESPNU.Â
