
Volleyball Falls to Indiana in Five Set Thriller

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Michigan State volleyball was defeated on the road in five sets on Sunday, Oct. 16, falling 3-2 to Indiana (25-21, 23-25, 25-27, 25-23, 10-15) at Wilkinson Hall. The Spartans fought to cut an eight-point deficit in set five to just three, but Indiana hung on to claim victory.
The Spartans out-hit the Hoosiers .227 to .214 overall and held an advantage in digs, 89-88. The Spartans match-best .323 hitting in set one and the team's .312 performance in set four were the only two .300+ hitting performances by either side in an individual set.
Freshman Nil Okur led the team in kills (13) and blocks (5) while hitting .400. Okur was joined by fellow freshman and countrymate, Selin Aslayan, in double figures with a season-best 12 kills. Returning to the lineup for the first time since Sep. 9, fifth year Rebecka Poljan finished with 11 kills. Junior Nalani Iosia and fifth year Zoe Nunez tied for the Spartan high in digs with 16, while Nunez tallied her third double-double of the season with a match-high 47 assists.
Michigan State took set one despite Indiana coming out of the gates hot. The Hoosiers held an early 5-1 lead over the Spartans but a 6-2 MSU run tied the set at 11-11. MSU took its first lead of the set, 14-13, on a Poljan kill and later led the set by as many as five points. A block by Okur and Aslayan put the Spartans up 22-17 and forced a Hoosier timeout. Indiana went on a 3-0 run out of the break to cut the lead to 22-20, but a pair of kills by Okur and a Hoosier attacking error ended the set in favor of MSU.
Set two was back-and-forth, featuring nine tied scores and five lead changes. Back-to-back Okur kills gave the Spartans a 14-10 advantage, but a 3-0 Indiana run had the Hoosiers right back in it. A Poljan kill gave MSU back a three-point edge, 18-15, but Indiana went on a 5-1 run to take the lead back at 20-19. Teams traded points until the set was tied at 23-23, but a kill from Grae Gosnell and an MSU error gave Indiana its first set win of the afternoon.
Michigan came back from a seven-point deficit in set three (18-11) to tie the set late 22-22 using an 11-4 run. The Spartans held set point up 25-24, but a service error followed by a pair of kills by IU's Mady Saris gave Indiana the edge it needed to win the set. Saris had nine kills in set three for the Hoosiers.
Set four was another close one as the team's exchanged 15 tied scored and six lead changes. Neither team held more than a two-point lead over the other throughout the set, with Indiana leading as late as 20-18. MSU used a 3-0 run to take a 21-20 lead before the team traded blows to tie the set at 23-23. Freshman Evie Doezema's fourth kill of the fourth set was the deciding blow as the Spartans took set four, 25-23.
It was a forgetful start to the fifth set for Michigan State who trailed by as many as eight points, 10-2. The Spartans didn't quit and battled back however to forced an Indiana timeout down 12-9. Sophomore Aliyah Moore had back-to-back-to-back kills for the Spartans to help the team pull withing three. Indiana found itself once again out of the timeout to close the match on a 3-1 run.
Indiana got a 21-kill performance from Saris to lead all hitters. Paula Cerame posted a match-best 23 digs and Camryn Haworth had 46 assists for the Hoosiers.
Up Next: It's another split weekend for the Spartans next week as Michigan State opens the week with a trip to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the No. 5-ranked Wisconsin Badgers on Friday, Oct. 21 at 8:00 p.m. ET. MSU returns to the Breslin Center next Sunday, Oct. 23 for a 2:00 p.m. match against Indiana.
