Spartans Battle to Five Sets in Loss to Indiana

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State volleyball dropped a five set nail-biter on Sunday afternoon, falling to Indiana, 3-2 (25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 13-25, 13-15). The Spartans led late in the fifth set, but the Hoosiers closed the match on a 4-1 run.
Michigan State hit .188 overall, hitting a team-best .353 in the deciding fifth set. Indiana hit .226 and out-blocked the Spartans 15-6. MSU held Indiana's offense to a -.029 hitting percentage in set three.
Sophomore Aliyah Moore led the match with 16 kills, while sophomore Grace Kelly posted a career-high 10 for Michigan State coming off the bench in set two. Fifth year Zoe Nunez tallied her fifth double-double of the season and second in as many games, leading the Spartans with 35 assists, 11 digs and four blocks. Nunez tied her season-high with four blocks on Sunday. Junior Nalani Iosia came close to a double-double of her own with eight digs and seven assists.
Indiana led 12-11 nearing the mid-way point of the first set, but a 5-1 run from the Spartans gave MSU the 16-13 edge that it would maintain throughout the remainder of the set. Michigan State led by as many as five points in set one before a 4-0 Hoosier run late cut that lead to one at 23-22. Fifth year Rebecka Poljan's fourth kill of the set sealed the deal for MSU.
The Hoosiers took an early 10-3 lead over Michigan State in set two, but the Spartans clawed back with a 12-4 run that saw them take a 15-14 lead. Indiana responded with a 7-1 run of its own to take back a 21-16 lead for MSU and eventually win the set.
Michigan State led throughout set three, never allowing the Hoosiers to take a lead. MSU opened the set on a 5-1 run sparked by a series of kills from Moore and several Hoosier attacking errors. Indiana errors were a theme of set three as the Hoosiers were limited to just -.029 hitting by the Spartan defense. The Hoosiers fought back to tie the set at 11-11, but a 5-1 MSU run gave the Spartans a four-point edge. Indiana would once again respond and bring the Michigan State lead back to just one, but the Spartans played tough to build a five-point lead following a pair of kills by freshman Selin Aslayan.
Set four was all Hoosiers as Indiana hit .387.
Set five featured the most lead change of any set in the match (5) as the teams with back-and-forth with 11 tied instances. Freshman Nil Okur's kill gave Michigan State a narrow 8-7 lead as the teams switched sides. The Spartans called timeout after Indiana took an 11-10 lead, scoring back-to-back points out of the break to force the Hoosiers to talk things over. Indiana responded with its own 2-0 run to force Michigan State's final timeout of the set. Moore's 16th kill of the afternoon tied the set at 13-13, but an MSU service error and a subsequent kill by Indiana's Morgan Geddes ended the match.
Three Hoosiers finished with double-digit kills led by Mady Saris' 15. Camryn Haworth had a double-double for Indiana with 40 assists and 12 digs. Savannah Kjolhede finished the match with nine blocks (2s-7a).
