No. 24 Spartans Prepare for Final Fall Competition in Reno
12/17/2022 12:55:00 PM | Wrestling
RENO, Nev. – No. 24 Michigan State wrestling hits the road for the final time before the holiday break, as the Spartans travel to face a competitive field at the 2022 Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Dec. 18, inside the Reno Events Center. Wrestling matches are slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. (ET) and run throughout the day.
Â
HEAD COACH ROGER CHANDLER SAID…
"This tournament is a great opportunity for our guys to compete against opponents that they wouldn't necessarily have a chance to compete against during our regular season. The Reno Tournament of Champions is one of the premier events on the collegiate wrestling calendar, and I'm really excited to see how our guys perform on Sunday. I'm also really looking forward to seeing Rayvon Foley and Cameron Caffey appear in their first tournament action of the 2022-23 season. They are both guys who we expect a lot from, so this competitive environment will be good for them as they continue to build their seasons. This team continues to push forward, and I know that they will go out and expect to dominate as we continue the season."

RANKING ROUNDUP
Michigan State remained in the national rankings for the second straight week according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association. MSU rose to the No. 24 position in the rankings released on Dec. 13, after debuting at No. 25 the week prior. In addition to the NWCA poll, the Spartans maintained placements in both InterMat rankings. MSU remained at No. 30 in the organization's dual meet rankings, and rose one spot to the No. 25 position in the most recent Tournament Power Index, released on Dec. 13. The FloWrestling Tournament Rankings saw MSU come in at No. 30, tied with Air Force. According to the Wrestle Stat dual rankings, the Green & White rank as the No. 21 team in the nation. MSU also garnered the No. 33 placement in the organization's tournament power index. On an individual basis, five Spartans earned rankings according to InterMat, including Tristan Lujan (#32 | 125), Rayvon Foley (#5 | 133), Chase Saldate (#17 | 157), Layne Malczewski (#10 | 184) and Cameron Caffey (#16 | 197).
Â
STARTIN' SPARTAN STRONG
Through the first six duals on the schedule, Michigan State is off to the best start for any Spartan wrestling team since the 1973-74 squad published an identical 6-0 record through the early portion of the season. The 1973-74 edition of the Green & White went on to record 12 overall dual victories and finish third at the Big Ten Championships. MSU's unblemished start to the season marks the best run for Michigan State since head coach Roger Chandler assumed the top job in East Lansing. Chandler's previous best mark through six duals was 5-1, set last season. The Green & White went 5-0 in the fall portion of the calendar but yielded a 27-14 defeat to then-No.7 Ohio State on Jan. 8. MSU's most recent victory over Brown, highlighted by a pair of pins from junior Chase Saldate and graduate Ryan Vasbinder, matched the 6-0 start from 48 years ago.
