EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's and women's track and field teams continue their season when they head to Chicago on Feb. 11-12 for the Windy City Invite being hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
Â
After a light weekend at the Meyo Invitational that saw Sophia Franklin set a new school record in the women's indoor pole vault and men's pole vaulter Trevor Stephenson registering a new personal best, the Spartans will be sending a collection of distance runners, sprinters, jumpers and throwers to Gately Park. MSU is set to face competition from Arizona, Howard, Illinois, Michigan, Oregon, South Florida, Tulsa and the host Badgers.
Â
A week prior to Franklin's program-record vault, MSU had competitors in the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet and the Indiana University Relays, while Morgan Beadlescomb was the first collegiate athlete to cross the finish line in the men's 3000m race at the Millrose Games. Highlighting the McCravy Memorial was Heath Baldwin winning the men's heptathlon, while Ryan Talbot being the runner-up behind Baldwin was one of four second-place finishes for the Spartans in Kentucky. Among those three other Spartans to place second were women's high jumper Avery Budz alongside Franklin and Stephenson. For the IU Relays, Jenna Magness (women's 3000m), Melanie Helder (women's mile) and Andrew Nolan (men's 3000m) all captured second place in their respective races using PR times.
Â
Beadlescomb's 7:43.22 PR time at the Millrose Games broke the MSU men's 3000m record and gave him the best time in the nation this season, while Franklin's 4.38m vault last week put her eighth in the NCAA and Baldwin's 5701 points in the heptathlon is ninth among Division I leaders. Other Spartans in the top-25 nationally include Stephenson's 5.45m mark at Meyo ranking 11th, Talbot's 5599 heptathlon points at the McCravy Memorial placing him 14th and Magness' 9:05.62 time in the IU Relays' 3000m putting her 19th in the NCAA.
Â
In addition to the action in Chicago, the Spartans will send Magness, Lynsie Gram and Casey Mossholder to take part in the women's 5000m race at Vanderbilt's Indoor Music City Challenge this weekend.
Â
Following the Windy City Invite, Michigan State will get its final work in before the Big Ten Indoor Championships when the Spartans head to the Silverston Invitational on Feb. 18 and the Alex Wilson Invitational on Feb. 19.
