Beadlescomb Posts Fourth-Fastest Indoor Mile in NCAA History, Magness Wins Music City 5000m With MSU-Record Time, Five Spartans Place First at Windy City Invite
EAST LANSING, Mich. – It was another busy, record-setting weekend for Michigan State's track and field program, as MSU traveled to the Badgers' Windy City Invite inside the Track and Field Center at Gately Park on Friday and Saturday, while the Spartans also sent three runners to the Indoor Music City Challenge at Vanderbilt's David Williams II Recreation and Wellness Center on Friday night.
Â
DAY ONE RECAP
Friday evening featured another historic run by Morgan Beadlescomb, while Jenna Magness used a school-record time to be one of three first-place finishers for the Spartans on Friday night.
Â
Beadlescomb's 3:52.03 time in the Men's Magnificent Mile at the Windy City Invite not only set a new personal record and a MSU record, but also clocked in what is the fourth-fastest time ever for any NCAA men's runner in the indoor mile. The top-2 times in collegiate history are held by Friday's competition, as former Oregon Ducks and current professional runners Cooper Teare (3:50.17) and Cole Hocker (3:50.35) both lowered their own personal records in the race from their collegiate PRs. Teare's 3:50.39 in 2021 ranks No. 1 all-time in the NCAA, while Hocker's 3:50.55 in 2021 is second-best in college history. The school record by Beadlescomb is the second he has broken this season, running a 7:43.22 in the 3000m men's race at the 114th Millrose Games last month. Both his mile time and 3000m time are the fastest in the NCAA this season as well.
Â
For Magness, she ran a 15:36.60 PR time in the women's 5000m to earn first place at the Indoor Music City Challenge and break the facility record inside the Williams Recreation and Wellness Center. The time also broke her pervious school record for the indoor 5000m of 15:42.73 from the 2020 season. Her running mate, Lynsie Gram, finished seventh in the race with a time of 16:15.87, while fellow Spartan Casey Mossholder placed 21st at a PR of 17:01.35 in Nashville.
Â
In addition to Beadlescomb, Abdi Ahmed took home first in the men's 5000m run with a time of 14:08.82 at Chicago's Gately Park, while Quiara Wheeler placed first in the women's weight throw at the Windy City Invite with a 20.76m toss.
Â
Other notables in Chicago on Friday included Makayla Perez running the second-best collegiate time of the night (16:42.26) in the Women's 5000m Invite behind Wisconsin's Vivian Hacker, Valadian Pallett placing third behind Wheeler with an 18.08 PR toss and Kaia Scheffler winning her qualifying heat for the women's 60m hurdles with an 8.68 time.
Â
DAY TWO RECAP
The Spartans opened the second day of the Windy City Invite on Saturday with two quick winners, as Makenna Veen posted a 9:27.11 PR time to take first and Emily Bardwell placed third at a PR of 9:31.25 in the women's 3000m, while Terrence Muex ran a 47.37 PR time in the men's 400m dash to claim first place in that event.
Â
MSU continued the day in the men's mile, as Owen Huard ran a 4:08.70 PR time to place third, while the Women's Gold Coast Mile saw Melanie Helder take fourth with a 4:41.09 PR time and Katie Osika match her previous PR of 4:42.09 to place sixth.
Â
The first women's 800m race featured Alison Ziehl placing third at 2:16.25 and Abbey Carvey finishing fourth with a 2:18.44 time, while Lauren Freeland posted a 2:07.61 PR time to take second place and Kate Stewart-Barnett finished fifth at a PR of 2:10.41 in the Women's 800m Invite.
Â
Noah Sage continued his strong debut season when he claimed second in the Men's 400m Invite with a 47.41 time, and Trevor Stephenson picked up where he left off last weekend at the Meyo Invitational by recording a new PR at 5.46m in the Men's Pole Vault Invite, being the top collegiate vaulter in the event.
DIRECTOR OF TRACK & FIELD LISA BREZNAU QUOTABLE
"I think there definitely was an energy that built through the entire weekend. Starting with Morgan's race last night, him just setting the tone with making history in that moment, I think that just set that mindset into place that this is who we are and this is how we compete."
Â
"One of the things that we focus on constantly is just letting go and competing and letting the chips fall where they're going to. I think we did an amazing job of that. Just letting go and just seeing where we are at in an incredibly competitive arena. Some people faced some adversity, and that's okay, too, because it's a great chance to learn and grow and get better."
Â
"This weekend was incredible. I mean, to compete this well and for each other the way we did heading into the Big Ten Championships, we're super pleased with how it went here in Chicago."

Michigan State will get its final work in before the Big Ten Indoor Championships when the Spartans head to the Silverston Invitational on Feb. 18 and the Alex Wilson Invitational on Feb. 19.
