EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State track and field program has its last tune-up before the Big Ten Indoor Championships with two meets this weekend. MSU is sending representatives to the Silverston Invitational in Ann Arbor on Friday, Feb. 18, while the Spartan men's distance medley relay squad is taking part in Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 19.
Â
Serving as a final chance to compete before next week's B1G Indoor Championships, the two meets give MSU the ability to build off the success of the Windy City Invite and the Music City Challenge.
Â
At Vanderbilt's Indoor Music City Challenge, Jenna Magness led three Spartan runners on Friday in the women's 5000m by posting a first-place finish of 15:36.60, a mark that set a personal best and broke Magness' previous school record for the indoor 5000m. Heading up to Chicago and the Windy City Invite, Morgan Beadlescomb made NCAA history Friday by running the fourth-fastest time ever for a collegiate men's runner in the indoor mile at 3:52.03, a run that garnered him B1G Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week and gave him his fifth school record.
Â
The Spartans had multiple first-place finishers in Chicago as well, with Abdi Ahmed taking first in the men's 5000m run with a time of 14:08.82 and Quiara Wheeler placing first in the women's weight throw with a 20.76m toss on Friday. Saturday saw Makenna Veen post a 9:27.11 PR time to take first in the women's 3000m and Terrence Muex run a 47.37 PR time in the men's 400m dash to claim first, while Trevor Stephenson set a new PR at 5.46m in the Men's Pole Vault Invite, being the top collegiate vaulter in the event.
Â
Following the performances in Nashville and Chicago, the men's track and field team jumped into the Top-25 of the USTFCCCA National Rating Index, landing at No. 18 in the country.
Â
Entering the final weekend of the regular season, Beadlescomb's 3:52.03 mile is the top time in the NCAA this season, while his 3000m time of 7:43.22 at the Millrose Games ranks fourth nationally. Heath Baldwin's 5701-point men's heptathlon score at the McCravy Memorial is also a top-10 performance (ninth), while Stephenson's 5.46m vault ranks 11th in the nation. On the women's side, Magness' 15:36.60 run in the 5000m sits 10th in the NCAA and Sophia Franklin's 4.38m vault at the Meyo Invitational also ranks 10th among national leaders.
Â
Michigan State enters the postseason next weekend, as the B1G Indoor Championships are set to be held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio from Feb. 25-26.
