EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State head volleyball coach Leah Johnson announced the addition of two-time first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) honoree Zoe Nunez to the 2022 roster.
Nunez comes to MSU as a graduate transfer from Notre Dame.
"Zoe is joining us after a stellar career at Notre Dame and will come into our gym with high-level experience," Johnson said. "She's mature, confident, a natural leader and she's ready to leave her mark in her final season of collegiate ball."
Nunez, a 5-10 setter, is a native of Rockford, Illinois. The former Fighting Irish standout played in 102 sets last season, compiling 912 assists on 8.94 assists per set. During the 2020-21 season, Nunez's 10.61 assists per set ranked #33 in the nation while her 753 assists was #38. Nunez had a career-best 1,219 assists as a sophomore in 2019.
"I chose Michigan State because I know I will be surrounded by people who will push me outside of my comfort zone and provide me with the tools to thrive in any tough situation," Nunez said. "It felt like a place where I can grow into the best version of myself as a person, an athlete and a scholar."
In addition to her All-ACC honors, Nunez was named to the ACC Academic Team four times. Nunez's accolades don't stop at the ACC level however as she was named to the U.S. Volleyball Collegiate National Team – Gold roster in 2020. The transfer has twice been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, earning East Coast All-Region honorable mention in 2019 before being named to the East Coast All-Region team in 2020.
At Keith Country Day School Nunez was a two-time team captain and team MVP. Nunez helped lead the team to an Illinois state title in 2014 where she was named to the IHSA State Finals All-Tournament Team. Prior to her time at Notre Dame, Nunez ranked as the No. 52 overall recruit in the country by PrepVolleyball and was a 2017 Under Armour All-America honorable mention.
Nunez is the first addition to the Spartan volleyball program under Johnson after she took over as head coach on February 7, 2022.
