EAST LANSING, Mich. – Former Michigan State wrestler and two-time NCAA qualifier Dave Campbell has passed away at the age of 75.
Â
A two-year varsity letterwinner (1966-67) for Hall of Fame coach Grady Peninger, Campbell was a member of back-to-back Big Ten Championship teams as well as the Spartans' run to the team title at the 1967 NCAA Championships.
Â
The Marcellus, New York native was the Green and White's starter at 147 pounds in 1966 and helped the team take home the conference title, qualifying for the 1966 NCAA Championships where the Spartans took sixth place.
Â
Campbell then bumped up to 152 pounds in 1967, and made a run to the Big Ten finals, where he finished runner-up to Fred Stehman of Michigan. He was then one of 11 NCAA qualifiers for the Spartans at the 1967 national championships, as seven MSU wrestlers earned All-American status at the tournament to earn the program's only NCAA title.
"He was a great teammate," said and MSU Hall of Famer Don Behm. "Always a positive person, he was willing to help others on the team and was an important part of the championship team. IÂ talked with his wife Lynn today to express my condolences and tell her that his memory will live on."
Â
A member of the MSU graduating class of 1969, Campbell remained a huge supporter of Spartan Wrestling and Michigan State Athletics up until his passing.
Â
Service arrangements are pending.
