
Michigan State Topples Titans in Elon Cardinal Invite Finale

ELON, N.C. – Michigan State softball piled up 13 runs on 19 hits in a 13-1 victory over Detroit Mercy on Sunday, March 6 at the Elon Cardinal Invite. Six Spartan batters turned in multi-hit efforts while the MSU pitching staff allowed just two hits.
A win on Sunday pushes Michigan State's overall record to 11-8 on the season. The Spartans wrap up the Elon Cardinal Invite with a record of 3-2.
In the circle, Michigan State got a full-staff effort using three different pitchers. Freshman Faith Guidry started the game for MSU striking out two batters in two innings. Junior Sarah Ladd came on in the third inning, pitching three hitless innings and striking out three batters. Ladd was credited with the win as the most effective pitcher during the game. Freshman Ashley Martin made her first career appearance as a Spartan, striking out three in two innings while allowing a lone earned run.
Michigan State's pitching staff lowered its collective ERA to 1.29 for the season along with a .91 WHIP.
Nine different Michigan State batters accounted for 19 hits on Sunday in the team's best offensive performance of the season. Senior Jessica Mabrey, senior Courtney Callahan, senior Kendall Kates and Junior Camryn Wincher all finished with three hits each while fifth year Caitie Ladd and freshman Kayleigh Roper each had two. Sophomore Zaquai Dumas, senior Mackenzie Meech and sophomore Marissa Trivelpiece also recorded hits. Callahan led the team with three runs batted in on a pair of doubles and a triple. Meech and Kates each finished with a pair of RBIs.
As a team the Spartans hit .500 (19-of-38) overall and .440 (11-of-25) with runners on base. The team raised its collective batting average to .263 for the season.
The Spartans scored first on Sunday, taking a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Roper led off the inning with a single and later came around to score on Callahan's triple to deep center field. Freshman Macy Lee didn't record a hit against Detroit Mercy but did drive in Callahan on a sacrifice fly to extend MSU's advantage.
A pair of singles from Caitie Ladd and Kates set up another sac fly situation in the fourth inning, with Roper driving in Ladd to give MSU a 3-0 lead.
Michigan State got hot at the plate late, scoring four runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh inning. After a lead-off ground out in the sixth, Michigan State had five straight base hits to extend the lead to 7-0. Kates, Roper, Mabrey, Callahan and Dumas all reached base in the inning. A Mabrey single scored Kates from second before a Callahan hit a bases clearing double to left center. Callahan came around to score of a single to left by Dumas.
MSU added six runs on six hits in the seventh inning to build a 13-0 lead over Detroit Mercy. Trivelpiece and Caitie Ladd opened the inning with a pair of singles before a double to left by Kates scored them both. Kates would later come around to score on a wild pitch. A double by Mabrey and a Dumas walk later set up an RBI double for Wincher. Dumas and Wincher would later score on a single to right center by Meech.
