EAST LANSING, Mich. – Coming of a successful Spartan Invite two weeks ago, the Michigan State track and field program is set to travel to Louisville, Kentucky this weekend for the Louisville Invitational, while distance runner Morgan Beadlescomb will race late Thursday evening at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California.
Â
With Beadlescomb racing individually at 8:57 p.m. PT Thursday on the campus of Azusa Pacific University in Heat 1 of the Men's 5000m Invite, he will kick off a busy weekend for the Spartans, as the rest of the program will make the trek to Louisville for the two-day meet hosted by the Cardinals. The Spartans open the Louisville Invitational on Friday with the men's hammer throw at 1 p.m., followed by the women's hammer at 2 p.m. Saturday's field events in Louisville get started at noon with the men's high jump, pole vault and long jump, while the track events begin at 1:30 p.m. with the men's 4x100m relay.
Â
After taking home 11 individual titles that included sweeping the 4x100m relays and the men's and women's 200m races at the Spartan Invite, the Green and White had three student-athletes in action this past weekend. At the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Arizona, the Spartans had a pair of decathletes place first and second, as Ryan Talbot tallied 7,677 points to win the title in his first decathlon, while teammate Heath Baldwin won two individual events to place second overall at 7,604 points. MSU also had Quiara Wheeler competing, as the 2021 NCAA All-American placed second in the women's hammer throw at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational in Coral Gables, Florida, also taking fourth place in the women's discus.
Â
For Beadlescomb, he opened his outdoor season at the Spartan Invite after taking home the silver medal in the men's mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships last month, as the nine-time All-American raced on his home track for the first time collegiately and won the 1500m with a 3:42.81 time.
Â
Fellow First Team Indoor All-American Jenna Magness will make her outdoor season debut on Saturday in Louisville, racing in the women's 1500m. The new men's 1500m school-record holder, John Petruno, is set to compete in Louisville, jumping up to the 3000m distance. The top women's 1500m runner for the Spartans this spring, Katie Osika will also bump up to the 3000m distance. Former Eastern Michigan soccer player Lexy Alston will run in her first attached race for the Spartans this weekend as well, competing in the women's 400m after racing the distance unattached at the Spartan Invite.
Â
Entering the weekend, the Spartans have a trio of top-20 national performances on the women's side and four on the men's side. Sophia Franklin's 4.32m height in the women's pole vault at the Spartan Invite puts her No. 11 in the country, while Kate Stewart-Barnett's 10:11.39 time in the women's 3000m steeplechase at the Raleigh Relays ranks 13th in the NCAA and Makayla Perez's 10000m time of 33:36.86 down in Raleigh sits 17th nationally. For the men, Talbot's 7,677 decathlon points in Arizona are the fifth-most at a meet this spring, and Baldwin's 7,604 score puts him at No. 8 on the NCAA leaderboard. The Spartan men also have Trevor Stephenson's personal-record 5.41m pole vault at Raleigh Relays that ranks 10th in the nation, while Petruno's school-record 3:40.43 run in Raleigh places him 11th in Division I among 1500m runners this season.
