Track and Field Tallies Three Winners at Louisville Invitational

Magness Makes Outdoor Season Debut with First-Place Finish in 1500m
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spartans had three individual event winners at the Louisville Invitational, led by Jenna Magness posting a personal-record time in the women's 1500m, as the Michigan State track and field program wrapped up action Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky at Owsley B. Frazier Cardinal Park.

While MSU got going Friday with Joshua DeVries placing third at 58.56m in the men's hammer throw and Valadian Pallett taking eighth with a PR throw of 45.73m in the women's hammer, the bulk of the Spartans were competing on Saturday. The second day of the meet began with the men's high jump and Tylor Leedom finishing in sixth place at 1.95m, while the men's long jump saw Adjoni Kirkland place sixth with a top jump of 6.16m. For the women, Olivia Lopez claimed fifth in the long jump at 5.70m, while Elizabeth Knoll finished in a tie for sixth with a 1.65m posting in the high jump event.

Closing out the field events were the men's and women's pole vault, as Trevor Stephenson finished in fourth place on the men's side at 4.97m and Michael Davenport was behind him in sixth with a 4.82m PR vault. Sophia Franklin ended up in third place in the women's event, successfully vaulting 4.21m on her first try, while Calli Ostapowicz cleared the 3.96m bar on her third attempt to place seventh.

The first track event for the Spartans was the women's 4x100m relay, where the MSU quartet of Jaiden Paris, Amani Nuels, Kaia Scheffler and Shakira Dancy posted a time of 46.70 that was second to Louisville's 45.29 time.

In the men's 1500m, Andrew Nolan paced MSU with a second-place finish and a personal-best time of 3;45.09, with Owen Huard (3:46.75) and Steven Stine (3:49.02) both running personal-record times as well to finish fifth and eighth, respectively. The women's 1500m featured Magness winning the event by over nine seconds with her 4:16.89 PR, while Makenna Veen placed third with her own personal record of 4:26.13 and Casey Mossholder followed in fourth at 4:30.88.

Paris was the second Spartan to win an individual event, as Paris tallied a 13.45 PR time in the women's 100m hurdles to place first, with her teammate in Scheffler being the runner-up at a time of 14.14.

The men's 400m dash had Noah Sage and Terrence Muex finish back-to-back in the race, as Sage's 48.02 time was good enough for fourth and Muex took fifth at 48.97. Following that was the women's 400m, where recent MSU addition Lexy Alston finished in seventh at 59.07 in her first race in the Green and White.

In the men's 100m dash, Antonio Postell II was able to cross the finish line in 10.88 to take fourth place and Logan Allen placed eighth at 11.18. In the women's 100m dash, Nuels continued a strong day by finishing in second place with a PR time of 11.78.

After the men's 800m featured Luke Perelli as the lone Spartan in the event and place eighth at 1:55.69, the women's 800m had three Spartans land in the top-5 finishers. Katie Osika finished in second place at a 2:07.15 PR, while Lauren Freeland placed fourth at a 2:07.33 PR and Melanie Helder took fifth at a PR of 2:07.59.

Muex continued to his impressive day by finishing third in the men's 200m dash, running a personal-best of 21.01, and Postell placed sixth with a 21.76 time. The women's 200m dash had a trio of Spartans place second through fourth, as Dancy paced MSU with a 24.00 time in second, followed by personal records of 24.35 for Nuels and 24.37 for Paris to take the next two spots.

John Petruno set another record on Saturday, this time when he placed first in the men's 3000m, as Petruno (8:07.90) and Abdi-Fetah Ahmed (8:18.36) both broke the previous stadium record of 8:20.04. Ahmed's time finished third in the event, while Alexander Penski (8:21.21), Jeremy Kloss (8:23.81) and Brendan Favazza (8:25.93) took fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

The day wrapped up with the 4x400m relays, as the men's team of Zachary DiStefano, Jalen Smith, Trey Searles and Hunter Zartman placed third at 3:21.21 to begin the event. With the women's relay following that, the squad of Helder, Shae Harbaugh, Osika and Freeland took fourth place with a 3:51.05 time, while the combination of Alston, Avery Budz, Brooke Bogan and Haley Rathwell finished in fifth at 3:54.28.

Michigan State now heads to the Indiana Invitational on April 22-23, with action opening at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in Bloomington, Ind.
