EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State head volleyball coach Leah Johnson announced the addition of setter Rachel Muisenga on Wednesday. Muisenga joins the Spartans from Penn State as a redshirt freshman with four more years of eligibility.
"Rachel is a player I've known for a long while, and plain and simple - she's a winner," Johnson said. "She's won at every stop of her career. Rachel has elite physicality and a high contact point to go along with a hunger to constantly improve."
Muisenga, a 6-1 setter, is a native of Wheaton, Illinois. Capping off a decorated career at Benet Academy in 2020-21, Muisenga was named the Illinois Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year after leading the Redwings to an undefeated record. As a junior, Muisenga helped Benet to a 41-1 record and earned an Illinois High School Association state title.
One of the most decorated volleyball players in Benet Academy history, Muisenga was a two-time AVCA First Team All-American and was named Illinois Player of the Year by the Naperville Sun and the News Gazette in 2020-21. Muisenga earned All-East Suburban Catholic Conference honors in all four years of her interscholastic career and was named the ESCC Player of the Year as a senior. Coming out of high school, Muisenga was ranked No. 30 on the PrepVolleyball.com Senior Ace List and was a National Junior of the Year finalist in 2019.
"I chose Michigan State because I appreciated the commitment the staff has to its student-athletes as both players and people," Muisenga said. "It is a competitive and welcoming environment that I cannot wait to be a part of. Go Green!"
Muisenga joins a long list of fresh faces that Spartan fans will be introduced during the upcoming season. Michigan State is currently set to welcome nine newcomers to the roster in 2022 including Zoe Nunez, Aliyah Moore, Nalani Iosia, Grace Kelly, Maradith O'Gorman, Evie Doezema, Jahylin Swain, Lauren Schutter and Muisenga.
