
Spartans' Distance Squad Continues Season at IU Relays

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Michigan State track & field continued the season at the IU Relays Friday and Saturday, the Spartans' distance contingent posting a number of impressive performances over the two-day meet at Indiana's Gladstein Fieldhouse. Â
"We saw progress today and yesterday at Indiana," said Michigan State Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Lisa Breznau. "We engaged with the competition and took some chances that took many out of their comfort zone."
Michigan State began the meet on Friday evening in both the men's and women's distance medley relays. The MSU women, entering two teams, took both runner-up honors and fourth place. MSU's team of Katie Osika, Julia Bajt, Alison Ziehl and Kate Stewart-Barnett ran 11:29.28, while the Spartans' team of Lauren Freeland, Shae Harbaugh, Abbey Carvey and Judith Rector ran 11:36.35.Â
In the men's DMR, Jeremy Kloss, Hunter Zartman, John Petruno and Owen Huard finished first, beating out Wisconsin by less than a second with a time of 9:51.19. Â
MSU returned to action on Saturday afternoon in the mile. A trio of Spartans posted sub-5 finishes on the women's side, led by junior Makenna Veen with runner-up honors in a personal best time of 4:46.69. Junior Taylor Visscher also set a personal best with a time of 4:53.07, placing seventh, while graduate student Grace Molloy finished 11th in 4:58.58.Â
In the men's mile, Huard knocked off two seconds from his previous personal best to place third in 4:05.51. Kloss finished 12th with a time of 4:10.05 and junior Alexander Penski placed 14th with a time of 4:11.07.Â
MSU posted four top-10 finishes in the women's 800m, led by Osika in fourth with a time of 2:08.70. Freeland followed close behind in 2:08.74 for fifth, while Stewart-Barnett ran 2:09.34 for seventh and Rector ran 2:12.11 to finish in 10th. Carvey finished just outside the top 10 in 11th with a time of 2:12.73, and Harbaugh ran 2:15.26 for 15th place.Â
A trio of Spartan men recorded sub-2 finishes in the 800m, with Zartman running 1:55.28, junior Luke Perelli running 1:55.46 and sophomore Gage Killewald running 1:55.67. Perelli's time was a personal best.Â
Junior Emily Bardwell led the way for the Spartans in the women's 3000m, running 9:49.55, one of three sub-10 performances in the event for MSU. Junior Eleanor Kendell ran 9:57.02, while sophomore Madelynn Bean ran a personal best of 9:59.25. Sophomore Olivia Millen ran 10:00.55 in her first appearance in the event and junior Fatima Giron ran 10:11.69.Â
In the men's 3000m, junior Andrew Nolan led the way for MSU, running 8:12.07 for 12th. Graduate student CarLee Stimpfel ran 8:12.47 to place 14th and senior Aden Smith ran a personal best of 8:12.50 for 15th. Junior Andrew Lane ran 8:19.45. Senior Joshua Smith and junior Tyler Pritchett also ran personal bests in the event, clocking 8:26.16 and 8:32.20, respectively.Â
Up next, the Spartans travel to South Bend, Indiana for the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame on Feb. 3 and 4.Â
