Volleyball Set Back at Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS – Michigan State volleyball fought tooth and nail in a four-set loss (15-25, 25-23, 16-25, 20-25) at Minnesota on Sunday afternoon inside Maturi Pavilion.
The Spartans move to 13-8 overall and 5-5 in the Big Ten with the loss, while Minnesota improves to 10-8 overall and 6-4 in B1G action.
Freshman outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska led MSU with 11 kills and set a new career-high with three blocks. Staniszewska recorded her second double-double of the season adding 10 digs. Freshman outside hitter Taylah Holdem joined Staniszewska with a double-double of her own posting 10 kills and 11 digs, her sixth of the season.
Making her first career start, freshman middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig had nine kills on .350 hitting along with a team-high five blocks. Junior setter Julia Bishop led the Spartans in assists with 22 and junior setter Rachel Muisenga added 18 along with a career-high nine digs. Senior libero Nalani Iosia led all players with 15 digs.
Minnesota out-hit MSU .218 to .119 and were led by McKenna Wucherer's 17 kills. Melani Shaffmaster had 35 assists and 14 digs, and Arica Davis led all players with eight blocks. Taylor Landfair posted a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs.
The Golden Gophers built a 7-1 advantage from the jump and never looked back in set one. Michigan State pulled to within three points early, 7-4, but the Golden Gophers would use a 9-1 run to build an insurmountable 16-5 lead over MSU in the first. Michigan State out-scored Minnesota 10-9 over the remainder of the frame, but the Golden Gophers took the set 25-15.
Michigan State bounced back to win set two, 25-23, hitting .341 in the process. MSU trailed by four early, 10-6, but stormed back using a 5-1 run to tie things up at 13-13 on a kill by Kulig. Minnesota built a three-point advantage late after a kill by Lydia Grote to lead the Spartans 21-18, but MSU battled back to take six of the next seven points and put themselves on set point up 24-22. Minnesota staved off the first set point attempt, but Holdem found the set-winner on the next rally.
Minnesota regained control of the match in set three limiting Michigan State to .111 hitting. MSU brought themselves back within three points early with the score set at 10-7, but Minnesota would continue gradually building its advantage from there on out as a 6-2 run provided them with a 16-9 cushion. Staniszewska's tenth kill of the afternoon brought the Spartans back within six late, but Minnesota closed things out with three straight points to take the third.
Michigan State led by as many as five points in set four, 19-14, but an 8-0 Minnesota run provided the Golden Gophers with their first lead of the set and a 22-19 advantage over MSU late. Kulig briefly stopped the momentum with her ninth kill of the day to bring MSU back with a pair, but Minnesota would score the final three points of the set to take it, 25-20.

Michigan State returns home for a pair of matches next weekend against currently ranked No. 1 Wisconsin and No. 11 Penn State. Both Wisconsin and Penn State were defeated over the weekend, with Wisconsin dropping a five-setter at No. 2 Nebraska and Penn State falling in four to No. 19 Purdue on Sunday. MSU opens the weekend hosting Wisconsin inside the Breslin Center at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27.
