EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State volleyball looked to complete another reverse sweep on Friday afternoon but came up short losing to Indiana by a final score of 3-1 (25-22, 25-13, 21-25, 25-10) at the Breslin Center.
"We had a couple of rotations today where we couldn't score points and it came down to execution," said Michigan State head volleyball coach Leah Johnson. "Hopefully there is more of a nothing to lose mentality tomorrow night against Purdue. I want to see us end on a high note and send our senior Amani McArthur out the right way."
Michigan State moves to 17-13 overall and 9-10 overall in B1G action, while Indiana improves to 20-12 overall and 10-9 in conference play.
The Spartans were led by 13 kills for freshman outside hitter Taylah Holdem, who added eight digs to her final tally. Junior outside hitter Grace Kelly added seven, while junior opposite Aliyah Moore tallied six. Fifth-year middle block Amani McArthur finished with seven kill and a team-high four blocks. Junior setter Julia Bishop led with 16 assists and senior libero Nalani Iosia posted a team-best 12 digs.
A back-and-forth start to set one saw the Spartans trailing by just two, 12-10, but a 5-1 run opened things up in favor of the Hoosiers who took a 17-11 lead. Michigan State kept chipping away at the Hoosier lead late, using kills by Kelly and McArthur to force Indiana's first timeout of the set trailing 19-16. MSU pulled back within one, 23-22, after a kill and a block by freshman middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig to force the final Hoosier timeout of the set. Indiana responded well out of the break however finding two kills to take the first.
The Spartans used a kill by Holdem to cut the early second set deficit to three, 12-9, but the Hoosiers use a 13-4 stretch to close out the frame.
Michigan State bounced back to take set three as the team set its sights on another reverse sweep. MSU started the set on a 5-0 run with Bishop behind the service line and extended its lead to seven after a kill by Kulig put the Spartans up 12-5. Indiana used a 7-2 run to pull back within one of the Spartans mid-way through the set, 14-13, but Michigan State would secure four consecutive points to push its advantage back to five. The Hoosiers were forced to call their final timeout of the set after an ace by Bishop capped off the MSU run. Indiana was not done there though as a 5-0 spurt tied the set at 18-18. A pair of kills from Holdem and two IU attacking errors saw the Spartan lead increase to four, 22-18, before Michigan State won the set via a Hoosier service error.
With the Spartans trailing 10-6 in the fourth, a 9-0 Hoosier scoring stretch put the set out of reach for Michigan State. Kills by Moore and freshman outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska, as well as a block by McArthur tried to spark the Spartans late in the frame, but the Hoosiers maintained a 21-9 lead.
