Michigan State Suffers First Loss of the Season Against Creighton

CANCUN - Michigan State women's basketball suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Creighton, 83-69, in its final game at the Cancun Challenge.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 5-1 this season, while the Bluejays improve to 5-1 with the victory.
Graduate guard Moira Joiner continued her streak of reaching double figures in every game with a team-leading 13 points, adding a team-leading seven rebounds and two assists. Four Spartans scored 11 points, including graduate guard/forwards Julia Ayrault and Tory Ozment, as well as junior guard/forward Jocelyn Tate and sophomore guard Abbey Kimball.
Creighton was led by Lauren Jensen had a game-high 32 points.
The Bluejays jumped out to an early 14-5 after a hot shooting start for Creighton. A strong start by Ozment kept the Spartans within reach early on. The combination of Ozment and Joiner accounted for 15 of Michigan State's 18 first quarter points, as Creighton led after the first period 24-18. The Bluejays had three players with at least six points in the first 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, fouls start to mount for the Spartans. Kimball continued her sharp shooting with a clutch 3-pointer to make it a 35-32 game with three minutes left in the half. MSU used a 9-0 run to take a 36-35 lead. Behind 11 points from both Kimball and Joiner, MSU overcame the slow start and led 41-39 at the break.
The second half belonged to the Bluejays as they out-scored Michigan State 44-28 in the final 20 minutes. In the third quarter a 3-pointer by Emma Ronsiek put Creighton back on top, 48-45 midway through the period. MSU was able to tie the score once more in the period, but the Bluejays remained in control. Ayrault took control offensively for the Spartans in the third, scoring eight of their 13 points.
A Maly jumper at 7:45 gave the Bluejays their first double-digit lead of the game 68-56. CU used a 13-3 run over 4:14 to create separation as the Spartan offense went cold. MSU went 5-for-14 in the final quarter and were unable to mount a comeback. Michigan State had a short bench against Creighton using only seven players.
The Spartans remain on the road, traveling to DePaul on Thursday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. ET.
