Spartans Hit the Road to Face DePaul Thursday

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball will hit the road for its first true road game, traveling to DePaul on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. ET. The Spartans suffered their first loss of the season in the final game of the Cancun Challenge and currently stand 5-1 this season. DePaul defeated Loyola on Sunday and hold a 4-3 record. Alex Del Barrio and Isis Young will be on the call for CBS Sports Network.
• The Spartans are second in the nation field goal percentage, shooting 52.4 percent from the field. Michigan State is also fourth in the country in assists per game, averaging 23.3 apg.
• Graduate guard Julia Ayrault earned a spot on the Cancun Challenge All-Tournament team after a solid two games. In the two games she averaged 18.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game to go along with 1.5 blocks and 1.0 steals per game. She started with a breakout performance against James Madison with a career-high 25 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. She had the Spartans' first double-double of the season.

SCOUTING DEPAUL
DePaul holds a 4-3 record coming into the game against Michigan State. The Blue Demons have wins against Western Michigan, Stonehill, Howard and Loyola Chicago. In the Battle 4 Atlantis, DePaul suffered losses to South Dakota and Middle Tennessee. DU also had a loss to No. 17 Louisville, 81-74 on Nov. 12.
Anaya Peoples in is first on the team and second in the Big East in scoring, averaging 21.3 ppg. Peoples is also fourth in rebounding, bringing down 8.3 boards per game. Kate Clarke is second in scoring with 15.1 ppg. As team, DePaul is second in the league in scoring, averaging 81.1 ppg.
The Blue Demons have two players who will be familiar to Spartan fans in Clarke and Michelle Sidor, who both played for Michigan last season.
Doug Bruno is in his 38th season at DePaul with a career record of 778-388.
SERIES HISTORY VS. DEPAUL
Michigan State holds a 3-0 series lead against DePaul, but the teams have not met since 2002. The teams met in the WNIT with the Spartans coming out on 87-76 in East Lansing. The last time that the teams met former MSU assistant coach Kristin Haynie was in the starting lineup, scoring 18 points, while former Director of Recruiting Candice Jackson and former Director of Operations Julie Pagel Dombroski were both also in the lineup. MSU also had wins in 1981 and 1982.

Graduate guard/forward Tory Ozment has been making the most of her minutes off the bench. Ozment is fifth on the team in scoring, averaging 10.0 points per game. She has scored in double figures in the last four games, including a season-high 16 against James Madison on Nov. 23. She has also been solid defensively, with 1.8 steals per game. She had a career-high four swaps in the game against JMU.
HAVE A DAY JULIA
Against James Madison, graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault had a huge day. She had a career-high 25 points, which was the most by a Spartan this season. Her 15 rebounds were the most by a MSU player since Tamara Farquhar brought down 16 against Florida Gulf Coast (12/20/21).
It was her first double-double of the season and the third of her career. She was also the first Spartan to earn a double-double this season.

• With one block, Ayrault now 89 career blocks, which stands ninth all-time in the MSU record books. She just passed former Spartan strength and conditioning coach Annalise Pickrel, who had 82.

Shooting 70.9 percent from the field (39-for-55) against Detroit Mercy on Nov. 16, the Spartans had another stellar performance from the field against Evansville. MSU shot 63.6 percent from the field for the game, going 42-for-66 from the field. After starting the game 0-for-6 from long range, the Spartans ended the game shooting 47.1 percent (8-for-17).
KIMBALL KILLING IT
Sophomore guard Abbey Kimball is showing sign of a sophomore slump. With 71 points in six games, she has already passed her point total from last season of 57 in 23 games. Against James Madison she had her first 20-point game with 21 points, going 5-for-10 from long range. She is averaging 11.8 points this season, which is fourth on the team.
PACKING THE BOX SCORE
With MSU's high-flying offense, five Spartans are averaging in double figures through the first six games, led by DeeDee Hagemann's 15.0 ppg. Moira Joiner has been a model of consistency scoring in double figures every game for 13.0 ppg. Julia Ayrault is third in scoring with 11.8, followed by Abbey Kimball's 12.0 ppg and Tory Ozment's 10.0 ppg.
LENDING A HELPING HAND
In tying the school record for assists with 34 against Detroit Mercy on Nov. 16, 11 of the 12 Spartans that played had at least one helper. Hagemann led the way with seven, which was just shy of her season high of eight. Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault tied her career high with five assists. She previously had five assists against Northern Illinois on Dec. 20, 2020. Michigan State is first in the Big Ten and the nation in assists per game, averaging 27.8 apg.

MSU head coach Robyn Fralick announced the signing of four National Letters of Intent, including Sinai Douglas (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo Start High School), Helen Holley (Cleveland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy), Juliann Woodard (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County High School) and Inés Sotelo Miguez (Ourense, Spain).
Douglas is a 5-4 guard, who is a native of Toledo, Ohio. She attends Toledo Start High School and is coached by Dane Franklin. Douglas is currently ranked No. 87 in the ESPNW HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings. As a junior, she was a finalist for Ohio Ms. Basketball, averaging 16.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists. She captured her second City League Player of the Year Award last season.
Holley is a 6-1 forward, who is a native of Cleveland Ohio, plays for head coach Kevin Byrne at the Gilmour Academy. As a junior, she averaged 14.7 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. She captured second-team All-Ohio honors last season. During her sophomore season, in 2021-22, Holley averaged 10.9 points and 11.7 rebounds per game.
Woodard is a 6-0 forward, who is a native of North Vernon, Indiana, plays for head coach Kristi Sigler at Jennings County High School. Woodard is currently ranked No. 58 in the ESPNW HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings. As a junior, she averaged 22.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. She was named Indiana Junior All-Star last season. Woodard also plays for the West Virginia Thunder during the AAU season.
Sotelo Miguez is a 6-3 forward, who is a native of Ourense, Spain. She has extensive international experience, including playing with the U18 Spanish National Team last summer in Konya, Turkey at the Eurobasket Tournament. In the third-place game against Serbia, scoring 14 points and five rebounds in the game. She has played in the Spain Championship every season since 2019.
MEET THE NEWBIES
MSU introduces five newcomers to the team this season, including three freshmen and two transfers. The three freshmen are guard Bree Robinson (Mississauga, Ontario/Webb School), guard Kennedy Blair (Dearborn, Mich. /Divine Child) and center Mary Meng (Grafton, Ohio/Midview.)
The Spartans also added two transfers to this season's squad. Junior guard Jocelyn Tate comes to MSU from Bowling Green State University, where she averaged 10.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game for the Falcons. Junior guard Lauren Ross has played in the Breslin Center before, transferring from Western Michigan. She was averaging 21.8 ppg for the Broncos before tearing her ACL on Jan. 11, 2023.
KIMBALL SHINES IN SEASON DEBUT
Sophomore guard Abbey Kimball tied a career-high with her 13 points against Oakland, logging her second career double-figure outing in matching her previous career-best of 13 points vs. Rutgers last season on Jan. 22, 2023. The game against Oakland was also her first career start. Kimball also netted a career-high three 3-pointers on Nov. 8, topping her previous top mark of two triples last season in same game vs. Rutgers.
HALL OF FAMER
Spartan All-American Tori Jankoska was inducted into the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame on Nov. 5. Jankoska was a four-time all-state player for Freeland High School from 2010-13 where she scored a Saginaw County record 2,333 career points, also good for No. 9 all-time in the state of Michigan. During her four years at MSU, Jankoska (2013-17) became the program record holder in career points (2,212), field goals made (707), 3-pointers made (320), and finished second in assists (489). She is currently an assistant coach at Virginia.
O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!
Michigan State head coach Robyn Fralick has announced guard/forward Julia Ayrault and guard Moira Joiner as team captains, as voted on by the players on the 2023-24 women's basketball team. The duo are the first captains that Michigan State has had since the 2019-20 season, when Victoria Gaines and Taryn McCutcheon were tabbed team leaders.
Ayrault is a guard/forward graduate student from Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. She is in her fifth season with the Spartans after red-shirting the 2021-22 season with a foot injury. Ayrault has played in 77 games at Michigan State, starting 15. Last season, she played in all 30 games, averaging 3.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.
Joiner is a guard, who is a graduate student from Saginaw, Michigan. She is also in her fifth season with MSU after missing much of the 2021-22 season with concussion symptoms. She has played in 95 games at Michigan State, starting 54. Joiner had a breakout campaign last season averaging 10.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Michigan State women's basketball suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Creighton, 83-69, in its final game at the Cancun Challenge.
