COLUMBUS, Ohio – It doesn't get much closer than this in a sweep. Michigan State volleyball was defeated by Ohio State on Wednesday night, 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 27-25) in front of a nearly sold-out crowd at the Covelli Center. The match featured 23 tied sets and 10 different lead changes throughout.
A loss moves Michigan State's overall record to 16-10 along with an 8-7 mark in B1G action. Ohio State improved to 10-14 on the season with a 7-8 record in conference play.
The Spartans out-hit Ohio State .189 to .177, finishing with 42 kills to OSU's 40. Despite the superior hitting effort, unforced errors proved to be detrimental for MSU throughout the night.
Freshman outside hitter Taylah Holdem led MSU with 14 kills on the night, adding seven digs, a block and a service ace. Fifth year middle blocker Amani McArthur hit .412 with 10 kills and a block to her final tally. Setters junior Julia Bishop and Cameron Berger each posted 15 assists, while senior libero Nalani Iosia notched a match-high 16 digs. Freshman middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig led all players with seven total blocks (two solo, five assisted).
Michigan State opened the match on a 4-1 run, but the Buckeyes would match it to tie things early at 5-5. The Spartans built an early three-point lead, leading 9-6 before a 10-3 Ohio State run forced MSU's first timeout of the set trailing 16-12. That run would prove to be detrimental for the Spartans late in the first. Michigan State came up big defensively out of the break with a pair of blocks to cut OSU's lead back to two, but consecutive points for the Buckeyes forced MSU to call its second timeout of the frame. A back-and-forth effort by both sides late saw Ohio State take the set, 25-22, but not before the Spartans tried to make it interesting staving off consecutive set points.
MSU started the second up 10-2 using strong starts from McArthur, Holdem and junior outside hitter Grace Kelly. Ohio State would force MSU's first timeout of the set after a 4-0 run that cut the Spartan lead to four however. Michigan State used McArthur's seventh kill of the night to push its advantage back to six, but a 5-1 Ohio State run forced a second Spartan timeout as the team led by two, 15-13. OSU's momentum continued after the timeout as the Buckeyes took their first lead of the set, 21-18, after an 8-2 run. Back-to-back-to-back Spartan kills tied the set at 21-21 to force an Ohio State timeout late. With the Buckeyes on set point, 24-22, MSU rallied behind kills from Holdem and McArthur to stop a series of set points once again. A competitive second set was ended by a pair of Buckeye points.
The Spartans started strong in set three taking an 11-5 lead over Ohio State after a 9-1 run that featured three Kulig blocks. Ohio State responded with a run of its own however as a 7-0 series forced MSU to call both of its timeouts. Michigan State battled out of the break as Holdem found three of her six kills in the set to give the Spartans back a 15-14 advantage. A pair of four-point runs by both teams evened out at 20-20. Holdem's 14th kill and a Buckeye hitting error put the Spartans on set point in the third to force an Ohio State timeout, but the Buckeyes responded with three straight to steal in 27-25.
