Baldwin Sets Javelin Record, Stephenson Crowned Pole Vault Champion on Day One of Big Ten Outdoor Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Highlighted by Trevor Stephenson's pole vault title and a school record in the javelin throw from Heath Baldwin, Michigan State Track & Field captured a number of podium finishes on the first day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Indiana.Â
MULTISÂ
Defending Big Ten champion Ryan Talbot kicked off the weekend for the Spartans in the decathlon 100m, finishing second in the field with a wind-aided 10.72 for 924 points. Competing in his first Big Ten decathlon, sophomore Dylan Terryberry finished ninth in 11.42 for 769 points. Terryberry picked up 774 points in the long jump in a tie for fourth in the field with a jump of 6.83m, while Talbot earned 727 points with a 6.63m mark in the second event of the day.Â
Terryberry earned a huge personal best in the shot put with a second-round 14.23m throw, finishing first in the field in the event and collecting 742 points. Talbot used a 14.01m throw to finish fourth in the field for 729 points. The pair then moved on to the high jump for the penultimate event of the day, where Talbot cleared 1.87m for sixth in the field and 687 points, while Terryberry cleared a personal-best height of 1.78m for 610 points and a tie for eighth place.Â
In the final event of the first day, Talbot turned in the best time in the field in the 400m in 47.87, earning 915 points. Terryberry ran 51.05 for 767 points. Talbot finished the day in a tie for second with 3,982 points, while Terryberry finished with 3,662 points in eighth.Â
Junior Autumn Glover, MSU's lone entrant in the heptathlon, began her weekend with a time of 15.21 in the 100m hurdles for 814 points. In the second event of the day, she cleared 1.62m in the high jump for 759 points. She then recorded mark of 9.58m in the shot put for 502 points and finished second in her heat in the final event of the day, the 200m, running 25.73 for 821 points. Glover finished the day with 2,896 points, good for 12th place in the field with three events remaining.Â
JUMPSÂ
Stephenson and Indiana's Nathan Stone battled back and forth for the pole vault title. Stephenson cleared his opening height of 5.14m on his second attempt before passing at 5.24. Stone, who entered at an opening height of 5.24, cleared on his second attempt to leave the athletes in a tie for first before attempting at 5.34m. After Stephenson made it over the bar at 5.34 in his first attempt, Stone cleared on his second jump to give Stephenson the lead. Stephenson then passed his final two attempts at 5.44m after Stone cleared his first, tying the competition again. Stephenson cleared 5.49m on his second attempt to retake the lead and Stone passed his final attempt at the height. In his last attempt to stay in the competition, Stone missed at 5.54m to secure the win for Stephenson. With the win already under his belt, Stephenson jumped at 5.54m but missed all three attempts. The conference title marked Stephenson's first, capping off a historic five-year Big Ten career for the graduate student. Â
THROWSÂ
A weekend off from the multi-events did not stop Baldwin from breaking records, as he shattered the Spartan javelin throw record on his first attempt of the competition with a 69.11m throw. The mark topped the previous record of 65.16m set by Max Knoblock in 2017 and was nearly a five-meter improvement from his previous personal best of 64.64m. The school record is Baldwin's third of the 2022-23 campaign and second of the outdoor season after setting the heptathlon and decathlon records this year.Â
Junior Joshua DeVries finished 10th in the men's hammer throw with a first-round throw of 61.35m. On the women's side, sophomore Valadian Pallett set a personal best of 54.02 in the second round to finish 12th. Â
SPRINTSÂ
Individual compeition on the track began Friday afternoon with the men's 400m hurdles. Senior Kendel Hammock clocked his first-career sub-52 performance in the event with a personal best of 51.48 to finish sixth overall and qualify for Sunday's final.Â
Junior Kaia Scheffler ran a two-second personal best in the women's 400m hurdles, running 1:01.80.Â
Graduate student Shakira Dancy was the second Spartan of the day to punch her ticket to a final, running a personal best of 23.53 in the 200m to finish third in her heat and eighth overall to advance to Sunday's final.Â
DISTANCEÂ
The first day of compeition wrapped up with the 1500m prelims and 10,000m finals Friday evening. In the men's 1500m, graduate student John Petruno (3:45.25) and junior Owen Huard (3:46.12) finished in the top three of their heat to automatically qualify to Sunday's 12-athlete final. Senior Jeremy Kloss ran a personal best of 3:47.98 to finish 19th.Â
A pair of Spartans also qualified to the women's 1500m final, with seniors Katie Osika (4:19.45) and Lauren Freeland (4:19.39) securing top-three spots in the third heat to advance to Sunday's final. Senior Judith Rector (4:23.15) and sophomore Olivia Millen (4:29.64) both set personal bests in the event.Â
Graduate student CarLee Stimpfel earned a podium finish in the men's 10,000m, running 29:28.64 for third place to earn his first-career Big Ten medal. Sophomore Drew Seabase, running the first 10,000m of his career, scored a point for the Spartans with an eighth-place finish in 30:37.40.Â
In the women's 10,000m, sophomore Kaitlyn Hynes impressed in her 10k debut with a fifth-place finish in 34:54.37. Junior Emily Bardwell ran 35:27.29 to place ninth and graduate student Grace Molloy placed 12th in 36:00.97.Â
The MSU men finished the first day in second place with 21 points behind Minnesota (32 points), while the Spartan women sit in sixth with four points.Â
