Iosia’s Career-High 27 Digs Leads Volleyball Against (RV) Washington

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State volleyball closed out Homecoming Weekend on Sunday afternoon falling to receiving votes Washington, 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-18) at the Breslin Student Events Center. Senior libero Nalani Iosia matched her career-high with 27 digs, tying for the third most digs in a match by a B1G player this season.
MSU moves to 7-12 (0-8 B1G) while Washington improves to 14-4 (4-4 B1G). The Spartans wrap up their two-week homestand and will return to the road next weekend in Los Angeles taking on USC on Thursday, Oct. 24 and UCLA on Saturday, Oct. 26. Thursday night's match at USC will be televised nationally on Big Ten Network.
Junior outside hitter Akasha Anderson had her best output of the season with a season-high 18 kills on .316 hitting and a block. Also with double-digit kills was junior outside hitter Taylor Preston who added 12. Sophomore middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig hit an efficient .545 with six kills and six blocks.
Senior setter Julia Bishop matched her career-high with four blocks, tallying her fifth double-double of the year with 35 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Taylah Holdem crossed the double-digit dig threshold for the second time this season finishing with 12.
Iosia's 40 digs this weekend moved her into seventh all-time for career digs at Michigan State with 1,261. This season Iosia is averaging 4.51 digs/set which would be good for sixth all-time for a single season at MSU.
Michigan State held Washington to -.0023 hitting with an elite defensive performance in set one that featured five blocks. The Huskies tied the set at 14-14 mid-way through, but it was all MSU from then on out. Michigan State used an 8-1 run out of that tie to accumulate a seven-point advantage up 22-15 late. Bishop was a part of three blocks late in the frame, amassing a new season-high in just the first set. Anderson's emphatic kill on an overpass secured the set for MSU, 25-17 and represented her fifth kill of the stanza.
MSU started set two strong forcing a Washington timeout up 8-3 after a Preston kill. The Huskies made an adjustment however finishing the set outscoring Michigan State 22-10. An Anderson kill kept MSU in the fight trailing 18-14. Michigan State tried to swing some momentum back to its side late in the frame, fending off a set point with a Kulig kill.
Another strong start for MSU forced an early Huskies timeout leading 10-5 in the third. Preston got going early with back-to-back kills forcing a Washington breather. The Spartans maintained an advantage past the mid-way point of set three up 16-14 following an Anderson kill. Washington took over late in the third going on an 11-2 run to close the set 25-18.
A block by Kulig and Holdem pulled the Spartans within two points early in set four, 6-4. Both sides traded points mid-way through with Michigan State fighting to maintain a four-point margin. A Holdem ace brought the Spartans within three points late, 19-16, as part of a 3-1 MSU run. Washington however used a 6-2 run to close out the set and the match, 25-18.
