Staniszewska’s Double-Double Leads Volleyball Against #13 Oregon

EAST LANSING, Mich. – In a match that featured multiple lead changes in every set, Michigan State volleyball was defeated by No. 13-ranked Oregon, 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-18) on Thursday night at the Breslin Student Events Center.
"We were inconsistent tonight," said Michigan State head coach Leah Johnson. "We had some highlight moments and also some moments of bad volleyball. Nalani was excellent tonight and played well. Oregon is one of the top blocking teams in the country and they had our number tonight."
MSU moves to 11-17 (4-13 B1G) while No. 13-ranked Oregon improves to 20-6 (12-5 B1G). It snaps Michigan State's three-match winning streak. The Spartans are back in action at home on Saturday, November 23 when they welcome Maryland to East Lansing for a 1:00 PM match.
Sophomore outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska turned in her first double-double of the season on Thursday finishing with 10 kills and 10 digs. It's the third career double-double for the Warsaw, Poland native. Junior outside hitter Akasha Anderson led the team with 11 kills.
Senior libero Nalani Iosia tallied her 12th match of the season with 20 or more digs finishing with 22 to lead all players. Iosia is now 29 digs away from 2,000 for her career. Splitting the assists were seniors Julia Bishop (15) and Rachel Muisenga (13). Sophomore middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig led MSU with three blocks.
A back-and-forth opening to set one changed tune when Oregon took a 16-11 lead over MSU on a 7-1 run. The Spartans fought back with a run of their own however as a 6-0 stretch provided them with a 20-19 lead over the Ducks in the late stages of the frame. Kulig and Staniszewska made their presence felt in the run with Kulig posting a block and a kill, and Staniszewska tallying a kill and an ace. Oregon ended the stanza on a 6-1 run to take the first, 25-21. Iosia was impressive with 10 of her digs coming in set one.
Back-to-back aces by Muisenga put MSU up early in set two, 9-4, to force a Duck breather. A kill by Preston helped the Spartans maintain that lead into the middle stage of the frame, 13-9, and an ace by Preston kept MSU ahead later on, 15-13. Oregon found its footing late in the set with a 12-3 run giving them the set, 25-18.
Kills by Preston, Staniszewska and Anderson put Michigan State ahead 9-6 early in the third, but Oregon utilized a 10-2 swing to lead 16-11 over the Spartans. A Preston kill followed by a block by Preston and junior middle blocker Evie Doezema pulled MSU back within five points late, 20-15, but the sides traded points for the remainder of the match.
