11/3/2024 4:25:00 PM | Volleyball
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Senior libero Nalani Iosia posted a B1G best 34 digs on Sunday afternoon in Michigan State's 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-18) loss to Ohio State at the Breslin Student Events Center.
Iosia's 34 digs are the third-most all-time for a single match at Michigan State. Her 34 digs are tied for the 12th-most nationally in a four set match this season. It's the most in a four set match in program history, topping Jane Zenner's 32, also against Ohio State on September 17, 1983.
Michigan State moves to 8-15 (1-11 B1G) while Ohio State improves to 10-12 (3-9 B1G). The Spartans are out of town next week heading East to face Maryland on Thursday, November 7 and Rutgers on Friday, November 8.
Also with a new career-best for MSU was senior setter Julia Bishop who tallied 19 digs in addition to her 32 assists. Junior outside hitter Akasha Anderson finished one kill away from tying her career-high for the second straight week with 25 kills to hit .250. Sophomore middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig's five total blocks led the match (three solo, two assisted). Junior outside hitter Taylor Preston also found double-digit kills finishing with 10.
Freshman middle blocker Carmen Waye made her first collegiate start on Sunday earning seven kills to hit .333 with two blocks.
As a team the Spartans hit .195 but started strong hitting .294 in set one. Ohio State hit .214 for the match. Michigan State won the blocking battle, 9-6 and finished with 79 digs to OSU's 67.
MSU trailed 7-3 early in the first, but a 9-2 Spartan run put them ahead 12-9 to force an Ohio State timeout. The run ended with a 5-0 swing for MSU that featured two Preston kills and a pair of Spartan blocks. Ohio State battled back to take a 22-20 lead over Michigan State, but a 4-0 response from MSU put the Spartans on set point following a kill by Waye. The Buckeyes thwarted MSU's first set point, but an Ohio State service error secured set one for Michigan State.
Several runs decided the outcome of the second set. A 7-1 Michigan State run put them ahead early 10-6, to force a Buckeye timeout. Out of the timeout, Ohio State responded with an 8-1 stretch of its own to lead MSU by a pair, 14-12. Both sides traded blows before a 6-1 Spartan scoring run put them on set point following back-to-back kills by Anderson. The Buckeyes found five straight points to end the frame however to come from behind, 26-24.
Ohio Stated led early, 12-7, but a 7-1 scoring run by Michigan State put the Spartans ahead 14-13 to force a Buckeye timeout following one of Anderson's five kills in the set. The Buckeyes increased their lead back to five late, 23-18, but MSU fought back to pull within two points of OSU. Michigan State's serve and pass game exceeded Ohio State's late as the Spartans used a 4-1 run to trail 24-22. An Ohio State kill finished the frame and put MSU behind 2-1 for the match.
A Preston kill pulled MSU within one point early in the fourth, 8-7, but Ohio State built a 19-11 lead over Michigan State. Kills from Anderson and Waye cut the lead to six, 19-13, but the sides would trade points for the remainder of the set with the Buckeyes taking it 25-18.
