THE ORIGINAL SIX
The top notes you need to know about Spartan hockey
• Michigan State heads back out on the road for a series at Penn State.  Seven of MSU's last eight games dating back to Dec. 6 have been away from Munn Ice Arena, and the Spartans are 6-1-1 in that stretch.  The Spartans are coming off a pair of 4-3 victories over Wisconsin - one in overtime - last weekend. MSU is No. 1 in both national polls for the third straight survey and the fifth week overall.  Â
•  The Spartans have surrendered 37 goals in 20 games this season, the eighth-fewest allowed nationally (and fewest of any Big Ten school).  Ranking eighth nationally with a 3.40 goals per game average and a 1.85  team scoring defense,  MSU's scoring margin (+1.55) is second in the B1G and seventh in Division I.  MSU has scored 55 of its 68 goals this season at even strength - that ranks second nationally to Minnesota, who has scored 70 of its 91 that way. Â
• The line of Charlie Stramel centering Isaac Howard and Daniel Russell had 11 combined points in the most recent Wisconsin series.  In nine total games together this season, the trio has a combined 17-16-33.  Howard and Russell each had three-point efforts in the game at Wrigley, which matched each players' single-game best.Â
•  Howard ranks third in the Big Ten in points (27, fourth nationally), second in goals (13, second), and points per game (1.35, fifth).  All but four of his points this season (23 of 27) have come with the team skating at even strength.  Russell is second among Spartans in goals (10), which is a tie for seventh in the Big Ten.  He ranks fifth in the league in goals per game (0.50).  His 10-6-16 scoring line puts him second on the team in both points and goals, and his six game-winning tallies leads the nation.  Stramel owns a 6-9-15 scoring line, and ranks third on the team in points.  He is one point shy of doubling his sophomore year scoring line (3-5-8, 34 games), with new career bests in each of the three offensive categories. Â
 • Sophomore Luca Di Pasquo has been exceptional this season, particularly in his last four post-holiday games in the absence of Trey Augustine at World Juniors.  In the most recent Wisconsin series, Di Pasquo made 30 and 31 saves, respectively, in earning victories over the Badgers.  His 31 stops in the Saturday game at Wrigley was his career best.   In six starts/complete games this season, Di Pasquo has a 1.32 GAA and a .945 save percentage.  Three of his eight goals allowed this season came on the power play.  Â
•  Trey Augustine won his second gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Championships, earning a 4-3 overtime victory in the final over Finland on Sunday.  Augustine was one of 10 athletes on both 2024 and 2025 gold medal winning squads.  He compiled a .917 save percentage and 2.52 goals against average in this year's tournament, appearing in five of Team USA's seven games.  He became Team USA's  winningest goaltender at this event with his 11th and 12th career victories, moving past Jack Campbell (2010-12).Â
