EAST LANSING, Mich. -Â Michigan State volleyball (15-5, 5-5 B1G) returns to the Breslin Center this weekend for a pair of home matches, hosting No. 10 Purdue (17-3, 8-2 B1G) on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. before taking on Rutgers (10-12, 1-9 B1G)Â for a 7 p.m. match on Saturday, Nov. 1.Â
Both matches will stream on B1G+. Fans can tune into John Kreger's call of the action on MSUSpartans.com or via the Michigan State Athletics app for both matches.
Friday's match against the Boilermakers will be the final Big Ten | Discover Volleyball Challenge match for MSU. Select conference matches played during the month of October will count toward the inaugural Discover In-Season Volleyball Challenge. Each team will play five designated challenge matches throughout the month, with the winner determined by the highest win total across the five games. MSU is 2-2 in Discover Challenge matches.
MSU dropped both of its matches last week on the road, falling in a four-setter at Iowa on Oct. 24 before dropping a three-set match to No. 1 Nebraska on Oct. 25. It marked the first time this season that the Spartans fell in back-to-back contests.Â
At 5-5 in conference action, MSU sits alone in 10th place in the league. Undefeated Nebraska ranks first, while Purdue and Wisconsin both hold an 8-2 to sit in a tie for second.
Junior outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska led MSU in total kills last week with 29 to average 4.14 kills per set over MSU's two matches, including a career-high 23 on .404 hitting against Iowa. It marked her first time eclipsing the 20-kill mark in her career and third time this season either tying or setting a career high in kills in a single match. Staniszewska also added 13 digs against the Hawkeyes for her fourth double-double of the season.
Redshirt freshman setter Malayah Long joined Staniszewska as the second Spartan to post a double-double at Iowa, totaling team highs in assists (46) and digs (15). Long has recorded a team-high seven double-doubles this season.
Junior middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig ranked fourth in the conference last week in blocks per set with 1.71, totaling 12 over MSU's two matches. She matched a season-high seven blocks against Nebraska. Kulig also posted the seventh-best hitting percentage in the B1G, recording 16 kills on 36 attempts without an error to post a .444 clip.
