EAST LANSING, Mich. – Top-ranked Michigan State hockey was narrowly defeated by No. 7/8-ranked Wisconsin on Friday night, 5-4, from Ron Mason Rink at Munn Ice Area. Freshman forward Porter Martone contributed three points for the Spartans scoring a pair of goals and assisting on another to push his season point total to 17 (9 goals, 8 assists).
"It was a tough night," said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. "I'd like to start by giving Wisconsin credit. The second period they took it to us, a lot of up and down the sheet and I don't think that is a recipe for success for our team. I thought they transitioned well and made us pay. I liked a portion of the third, and now it's about getting ready for tomorrow."
Martone led all scorers in Friday's game with three points and was joined in goal scoring by senior Daniel Russell and freshman Ryker Lee. Freshman Sean Barnhill, freshman Eric Nilson, senior Charlie Stramel, sophomore Shane Vansaghi, junior Gavin O'Connell and Russell tallied assists.
Michigan State out-shot Wisconsin 39-34 overall and won .517 percent of its face-offs (31-29). Stramel went 16-12 on the draw to lead all skaters.

Wisconsin scored four second period goals to take a 4-2 lead over MSU. The Badgers out-shot Michigan State 17-13 in the frame with three goals coming at even strength.
The Spartans looked to mount a comeback mid-way through the third when Lee's goal from a falling Nilson at the boards cut Wisconsin's lead down to 4-3. Lee's shot couldn't be completely corralled by the Badger goalkeeper and founds its way into the back of the net. Wisconsin responded swiftly however scoring their fifth goal of the night just 16 seconds later off a rebound in front of the MSU goal. Martone brought the Spartan deficit back to just one at the 10:24 mark, firing a shot from the slot after it was centered for him from behind the net by Russell.
